Day Trip to Dabube Valley from Vienna and Biking

Hi,

My 13 year old son and I will be in Vienna in June. On Monday June 17 we like to do the day trip to Danube Valley.

One option posted a few years ago was to take the train to Krems, rent bikes there, get on the boat to Melk then bike back to Krems and take the train back to Vienna.

Is this the only option still?

Or could we take the train to Melk (see the Abbey, etc.) then rent bikes there and bike to Krems and return the bikes in Krems before taking the train back to Vienna?

There is an organization called nextbike that has a partnership with ÖBB, the Austrian Railways. After you register with nextbike, you can rent a bike from any of their stands, including stands at most train stations in Lower Austria, where you want to bike. You can return the bike to any of their stands, including a stand at a different train station. Here is a link:
