train travel in Austria - Help!

we are a group of 3 friends travelling through prague-bratislava-budapest-vienna-salzburg-innsbruck-venice-florence-rome in June'13.

we are trying to figure if a train pass would be better or idea or if we shud book in advance since we have enuf time. prague (fly in) - cesky (by bus) - vienna (by shuttle) - bratislava (by boat). below are the trains we were thinking of taking

1. bratislava - budapest

2. budapest to vienna

3. vienna-melk-vienna

4. vienna-klagenfurt-villach-salzburg (same day)

5 salzburg-zell am se-kitzbuhel-worgl-innsbruck-venice (same day)

vienna to salzburg is primarily to ensure a scenic ride from vienna to salzburg. from salzburg - venice we are taking the route via innsbruck again only for the ride. I understand due to the routing, we would be getting in to salzburg & venice only by late eve - we have planned the stay accordingly. In italy also the venice-florence-rome would be on trains.

1. is the envisaged train travel feasible ?

2. would a rail pass would work for these or for most of these? which one?

3. or is it more econmical to buy the tickets in advance?

i know theres a lot of info available on various sites - totally confused with the info overdose. help would be most appreciated

There are many many threads/comments about rail passes. In many case they do not pay off as there are often other possibilities such as ticket purchase in advance with the real operator. Between Vienna and Salzburg there now is a second railway operator, named "Westbahn" (www.westbahn.at) running trains. Their fares are very good, tickets are sold on the train without surcharge.

For your day trip to Melk use the "Einfach-Raus-Ticket" (ERT). For more on that visit the website of Austrian Railways ÖBB (www.oebb.at) and/or use the search function of the forum!

For you detour via Klagenfurt on your way to Salzburg a (day of a) pass could actually pay off. For the rest not likely!

From Salzburg to Zell am See to Kitzbühel to Wörgl to Innsbruck you can also ride on the Einfach-Raus-Ticket as LONG as you ride local trains and obey the time rule (no use before 9am on weekdays!).
