Monaco/Monte Carlo day trip from Nice

Hi, my fiancé and I are staying in Nice for a long weekend in April and want to spend a day in Monte Carlo. We have never been so all help great fully received. Is there a train from Nice direct to Monaco? Do we need to get tickets before the day? What is the best way to see Monte Carlo? I have heard of a train that goes around sight seeing? Would love to find elevated views for the tourist pictures, take walk around the Marina, go to the casino...? Best places to sit with a coffee and people spot? Thanks in advance! :)

There is a train from NIce to Monaco....it takes about 20 minutes.

Here is a good little guide to Monaco that will answer the rest of your questions.

Monaco is an easy trip from Nice by train. The train is fast, cheap and reliable, but it can get crowded as a lot of people are doing the trip on their own. Go early so you can enjoy the outdoors and when the sun gets too hot you can find a spot in the shade and enjoy lunch and a nice cold drink. You can buy tickets on the same day you plan to go to Monaco, just make sure you get a return ticket. When you arrive in Monaco, save your energy (you will be glad you did later), take the bus to the old part of town (you pay 1 Euro as you board the bus) and get off at Oceanographic Museum. Cross the street and get your ticket to the tourist train. The train makes no stops, but it is fun and take you to streets where the hop on hop off bus can't go since they are narrow and the bus is too big to get there. The tour takes 30 min and it gives you awesome views of the area. You can then explore on your own, going downhill from the old part of town to the harbor area (much easier than hiking from the train station). There are few very nice photo stops along the way. The area is so clean and the landscape is so well maintained that it will take your breath away. You can easily spend half a day walking around without going into any museums. There are so many things to see and so many photo opportunities that you will have a hard time deciding where to stop and take pictures. If you plan to visit museums and/or the palace, I would plan for a whole day just to make sure you have enough time and do not feel rushed. One more thing: make sure you have a bottle with water with you. You will walk so much your feet will be sore at the end of the day and you will need a sip of water more often than you think you would!

Jason and Nicky....

You don't need to wait for a bus.

Just take an elevator from the Harbor level to the Rocher.

Budget 4 or 5 hours (you will see a LOT in that time) for your visit and slot in a stop at Eze Village on the way back to Nice.
