10-year old in Southern France & Monaco. Fun activities

I will be traveling to Southern France with my wife and 10-year old daughter in early June and thinking of staying in Monte Carlo for 1-2 nights out of the 6 nights we'll be in the area (after a couple days in London and Paris).

I've never been (my wife has been to Cannes once for work) to French Rivera and really want to see Monte Carlo in addition to other cities in the area.

I'm wondering what fun activities there might be for a 10-year old girl. She is athletic, a good cyclist and comfortable in the water since we live at the beach in Southern California. She can standup paddleboard, Kayak, swim a mile in the ocean, comfortable on a jet ski, boat, etc. We've swam with turtles, dolphins, leopard sharks and other sea life.

She's well behaved and comfortable in High-end establishments if they allow children.

We wouldn't want to be inside at a museum during the day if the weather is good.

Budget is a consideration but we're not poor and don't mind spending a little money on the trip for fun excursions since we rarely travel Internationally.

Thank you.

Now realizing the dates of the Monaco Gran Prix, I should have been more specific with our dates in June. We plan to be near Cannes, Nice, Monaco during the week of June 15th and can be in Monte Carlo at the end of the week if that is the recommended option.

Just so you approach this with the right perspective, hope that you understand how tiny Monaco is. It would easily fit inside NYC's Central Park.

So it would keep your daughter's interest for a few hours but probably not for a couple of days.

Plage du Larvotto (Larvotto Beach) has a playground and is OK for kids.

But a lot of the activities are indoor ones.....like the doll collection at the National Museum and the Aquarium.....which is excellent.

I think your daughter might be a bit old for the playground at the beach, and a bit young for the parascending and other motorised activities there. She will be able to swim safely as the anti-medusa (jellyfish) net will be up by then. If she is anything like the young people in my family, she will be happy just mucking about on the beach, but it would be a bit of a waste of money to come to Monaco just for that.

As Datthecoast says, the Oceanographic Museum is excellent, and there is a brilliant exhibition on at the moment - will continue until 2015 - allowing encounters with sharks. There is also a touch tank, turtles on the roof (and great panoramic views from there of Monaco and its neighbouring communities), and a good cafe. The museum is no longer the biggest, but it was the first of its kind and it is worth the entry fee just to enter the amazing building, clinging to the rock - looking through the windows, you feel you are out at sea. See www.oceano.mc for further information.

The new director of the National Museum has thankfully removed the doll and model collection, though odd pieces make a return from time to time in interesting contexts. However, even in its new guise, I doubt that would appeal and I won't list the other small but perfectly formed museums for the same reason.

You will be arriving a little too early for the summer fair on the port or the firework competition, but although the schedule of events hasn't yet been published, it would be an unusual week in which there was nothing to see or do in Monaco, with something for everyone.

All the high end establishments welcome young people and only the casinos are out of bounds to your daughter. If you and your wife want to take a look inside the Casino, you will need to take it in turns.

As Moth says, most of the events haven't been scheduled for June yet, however just to give you an idea, last year around mid-June, we had the beach volley competition with entertainment around the beach, the Open Air Cinema opens around that time, and if you're still here on 21st June, that's an annual music festival all over France and Monaco, with free live music in the streets throughout the day, and in Monaco, the headline act is the Tambours du Bronx, which is giving a free concert at the port: http://maboum.com/event-13024

Thank you for the feedback. We're normally not that interested in aquariums, preferring to be in the real ocean but it does look nice and worth a visit. It's now on the list.

Does anyone have recommendations for fun boat rides from Monaco, Nice, Cannes? We'd prefer an excursion/tour that points out some significant landmarks for my wife and I but also has some speed for my daughter that likes the excitement of a fast boat. I realize these may be two separate rides.

Maybe we could take a ferry to ?. This would give us a fun destination and be on the water.

Does anyone know if they allow 10-years olds to parasail with a parent?

Anyone have ideas for Jetski rental (she would ride with me).

Is there a recommended source for paddleboards and kayaks?

Thanks again for all your help.

One of the great trips to take from Nice / Cannes is the ferry out to Isle St Margueriite. It's a lovely destination that your daughter would enjoy.....
