Paphos at New Year

What is Paphos like around end Dec - early January?

How's the weather? Is there a lot to do if the weather is bad?

Over the years we have visited Paphos for xmas and new year quite a few times. We have had rain a few times but mostly it has been warm and we have been able to sunbathe. I would suggest that you choose a hotel over apartments as if the weather is not so good they usually have things to do and the gala dinners are very good.

Hope this helps

Average temperature in Dec / Jan varies between 10 and 18 C and these are usually the wettest months. However, the days are usually warm enough for tee shirts and shorts . Evenings are much cooler so warmer clothing is needed i.e. jumper, cardigan, jacket etc. Whatever the weather, it WILL be better than at home ! ! ! Many of the bars and restaurants close for the season and you may struggle to find one which will stay open until midnight for celebrating the New Year. The local council used to fund New Year celebrations in the town but this has now been cancelled due to the economic situation. The previous suggestion of staying in a hotel rather than self catering, is good advice as they like to keep their guests entertained and most do New Year parties.

Got to disagree with a couple of points in reply 2.

I find the daytime weather pretty agreeable until the start of the year. January - March is the worst for rain and storms. Evenings are cold from December on and the days are short.

In Paphos lots of bars are open into the small hours N.Y. eve/day. Cypriots tend to bring in the N.Y. at home and then go out to bars after midnight, so that's when things liven up.

I agree with the point about staying in a hotel rather than an apartment. Due to the type of construction in Cyprus, houses and apartments are difficult to heat up and it can be really cold indoors in winter. You'd be much cosier in a hotel.

In fact the days are longer than in UK in winter. Day time very variable for weather anything from shorts and t-shirts to waterproofs or fleece, perhaps all in the same day, evenings cool to cold.
