Elephant car hire

Just returned from Paphos few days ago.

We used this rental company during out stay in Paphos as it was recommended by many TA members.

They met us at the terminal and took us to a coffee shop just outside.

Had to pay for half a tank to fuel and 200 Euro deposit on credit card.

The car they provided wasn't bad but it was an old car with 70,000km on the clock. I was hoping it will be a little better.

The return of the was a bit of a nightmare. When we arrived back at the airport there was no one to take the car. They told us to park the car and leave the key inside the boot of the car. However we were unable to get inside the parking area due automatic barrier which did not recognise the number plate.

While we were worrying what to do, a couple staff from Elephant car hire arrived and took the car and the keys from us. thank god.

There are other rental companies at the airport and I noticed people returning their cars without any problem.

I also wish this company change their fuel policy. Returning empty tank is almost impossible. We returned the car with at least 10L fuel in the tank. This is one of the way they make extra money.

Instead of charging for fuel they should do 'full tank to full tank". This will be more beneficial to travellers like us.

I agree about the fuel policy. Whenever possible, I choose hire companies that offer "collect full, return full".

Also, it's not ideal leaving the car without a record that you returned it with no damage.

We're due to return the car we hired from Elephant on Saturday. Did they explain to you what you could have done had they not turned up? I've emailed them to ask them that, because I don't want to find myself in your scenario! I don't want to waste money making an international call to them either.

This car has also done over 70,000 miles, and is very battered, although mechanically it's ok. However the cigarette lighter car charger doesn't work.

You are probably driving the car I was driving when we were there ; sounds the same.

They told us to park the car in the parking area and leave the keys in the book if no one is there.

Unfortunately I was unable to enter the parking area due to automatic barrier which didn't recognise the number plate and didn't open the gate for us. I went several times round the parking area but couldn't enter.

Finally when I stopped at the place exactly where I picked up the car from. Fortunately two guys arrived and told me they were from Elephant car and checked the car and other things and took the key from me.

They told me all ok with the car and the deposit will be refunded.

Personally, I wouldn't use this company next time.

There is another thing that I didn't read prior to hiring the car from them.

They told me that if I was involved in an accident or incident and the car is damaged for some reason then I must call the insurance company and must not move the car until insurance rep arrives at the accident site.

Can you imagine if this is practical !! Say for example if I damage the in a remote mountain then call the insurance and wait in the same place which might be hours. This is worse if it happens in the evening.

As I have said; Although it was all ok, personally, I wouldn't use this company next time.

Ah I've booked with this company for the 3 weeks I'm in Cyprus in July after reading loads of good reviews about it. I'm kinda worried now!

Very possibly Sid! Was it a dark blue Ford Fiesta? No detergent in the windscreen wash?!

@SelinaHoward

The company is not too bad and you will be ok provided there is no incident of any kind.

Although the car is fully covered by their insurance company, I didn't like the fact that after an incident (however minor) I was not allowed to move the car until their insurance rep arrives at the site which could take hours.

I also didn't like the method of returning the car.

In my case everything was ok at the end.

@neilsolaris

They gave me a Mazda automatic, quite old and over 70,000 km on the clock. Many scratches on the body but drove nicely.

Oh forgot to mention that we also hired a Satnav from then 2 Euro per day.

The Satnav worked ok but it was so old and out of date that it did not recognized the Motorway A6.

It kept on taking us via small narrow roads unnecessarily. I was really annoyed with the Satnav.

We use elephant every year and never had a problem ,

to get in to car park on return you need to take a ticket out machine at the barrier and leave it in boot with the keys . Once ticket taken the barrier would open .

Never been met at airport on return always just left the car and always had deposit on hold released with in 7 days of return .

Using again in Aug .😎

I've generally been happy so far. We got a good price, even taking into account the inevitable waste of petrol cost trying to return it empty.

The lady called me straight away to clarify the return procedure at the airport, after I messaged her this morning. I told her the cigarette lighter charger wasn't working, and she thanked me for notifying her, and told me that she would get it repaired after I return it. Luckily we both have mobile data here, and we have a portable battery charger, so we can navigate using our phones, and keep them charged. Otherwise it would have been very inconvenient. I was expecting her to offer to exchange the car with a working cigarette charger, but she didn't!

Hi, we returned on Monday. Had no problems with the car, a newish Kim Sportage. We were a bit non plussed when they told us to leave the keys in the boot but videoed doing it in case of problems. They also told us to leave the parking ticket in the boot with the keys.Locked the car with the boot open, put keys in, shut boot, locked. Price was good service prompt. Would use them again.
