Getting from Strovilia to Famagusta

We will be staying in Protaras in the south and want a few days in Kyrenia. We plan to take a taxi to the crossing point at Strovilia then hire a car in Famagusta. Does anyone know how to get from the crossing point to Famagusta please? Are there any taxis at the border? Please advise.

Hi, have you hired a car yet? Why don't you check with the company if they allow you to the north most do but it's at your own risk? I've booked with Fontana and they are happy for you to cross. Just buy insurance at the border, I did it last year and had no problems at all.

Thanks for the info. We planned to take a taxi from Protaras to the border at Strovilia, then pick up a North Cyprus hire car in Famagusta for a few days, returning south again by the same method. The bit that we weren't sure about was getting a taxi from the border post at Strovilia to the Europe Hotel in Famagusta, and back. We wondered if taxis wait there for pedestrians crossing the border, but no one seems to know. It's a bit hit and miss. For example, what if the taxi driver on the Greek side doesn't come and pick us up as planned. It's unlikely we'd be able to get a taxi back from Strovilia to Protaras without a lot of hassle. In the end we've decided to hire a car in the south, as you suggest, and cross the border with it for a few days, to see old haunts where we used to stay many years ago. The reason we didn't opt for that originally was that we'd heard unhappy tales of hire cars from the south breaking down or having an accident in the north, then the hirer being asked for hundreds of pounds to get it back south over the border on a low-loader, as it's not covered on the TRNC insurance!

Hi, when I was crossing last year there were people there with their cases waiting for their taxi, so I think you will be ok?

We intend to hire a car in the south and have decided not to take it across the line into the North. If we cross the line at Strovilia to visit Famagusta is there a safe place to leave our car during our visit to Famagusta?

Would it be a better option to take a bus from Nicosia to Famagusta as we will be staying there for a couple of nights and visiting Kyrenia by bus?

Does anyone have any update? Would like to know how to get from the checkpoint to Famagusta after entering the north from the south.

There is a public bus from Agia Napa to Strovilia in the south. After walking through the checkpoint, how can I reach the city centre of Famagusta? Same questions raised here before but doesn't look like anyone gives a definite answer. So any information would be very helpful, as the last thing I want is to stand under the sun waiting for bus/ taxi that never comes or comes with a ridiculous price. Thanks!

A taxi would be your only option . just ask the officials ( North side) to call one for you as you cross, fare into Famagusta should be no more than 40 TL ( £ 10 ) ,It's about a ten minute drive

I take it that you are reffering to the Dee European Hotel ?, ask them to send one for you at a pre-arranged time?

There is no cross border public transport anywhere here in Cyprus , private Taxi or Hire car the only options.

There is Famagusta region in the South as well as the North .
