The buses to Mdina from Valetta are 80, 81 and 84. Other forum threads (here or elsewhere) have just listed 80. All three work. The buses are great! They are classic old British bus models, lovingly tended to by the drivers. It's a treat to ride the buses, and (in contrast to many other Med destinations) service is frequent and never excessively crowded.

I should add, that if you get to the central bus station, and don't have any maltese currency (they won't use the EURO until 2005-6), then just buy some water at one of the local vendors. They all take EUROs, and will give you Maltese currency in return. Buses are cheap and currency exchange near busstations is not easy to find.
