Gozo without a car

For a four/fiver day holiday with some time on the beach but also walking and going about on buses which place would be best to base ourselves for a self catering holiday

If driving on Gozo, remember that disc parking restrictions apply in and around Victoria until around 1pm. Discs are free and should be supplied with most hire cars. I have also obtained them from the Police station in Victoria and at the cafeteria on the Gozo Ferry (but, in both cases, that was some time ago).

it depends where you are are based, most places you will have to change buses in victoria and there can be a lot of hanging around, to get the most out of gozo and to get to some of the off beaten trackes you need a car. they are not exspensive , why dont you just hire for a couple of days, if your budget is tight. i think xlendi or masalforn is a good base both seasdie resorts with a selection of bars and cafes and restaurants. , you could also walk to victoria from boith rhese places and there is a god bus service to victoria. enjoy gozo

like others i would recommend Mayjo, although Gozo does have a good bus service these days and a lot more reliable than it used to be, although i do miss the old bus's.

if you are a first timer this website is useful

Hello,

My husband and I visit Gozo a couple of times a year and we've never hired a car...buses are cheap, environmentally friendly and you can get to wherever you need to, especially if you are happy to walk a little too.

We stay in Mgarr, it takes 45 minutes to an hour to walk to Victoria, around the same for a coastal walk to Mgarr Ix-Xini and another 1.5 hours to get to Xlendi from there. Qala is 15-20 minutes easy walk, Nadur 25-30 minutes and Ramla Bay approx 1 hour. This is at a steady walking pace.

A bus ticket costs 2.60 for the day and aren't always super regular, though we visit in winter. Bus timetables are available at http://www.arriva.com.mt/gozo-routes

The tourist bus can be fun, though more expensive, as it gives you a great tour of the main island sites, from which you could choose to re-visit or try other places...

A car would get you around the island quickly, so I see the attraction especially with a short stay...I might try the buses for one day then if it's not for you hire a car from the island?

Enjoy your stay :-)

Unfortunately the link that Amanda has given you is out of date - even though it still works ! Some of the route numbers were changed last year and the current route map can be found here: http://www.arriva.com.mt/file.aspx?f=1983 .
