ozankoy or esentepe

hi we would like to rent a villa next year in northern cyprus but unsure which area would suit us better. We would like to be able to walk to bars/restaurants in an evening and not have to drive everywhere.

any advice please

Haven't been to Ozankoy yet but spent a great week in a villa in Esentepe in Sept (2012). There are about 6-7 restaurants in & around the village (all within walking distance of each other) but the village is at the top of quite a long winding hill so I would recommend renting a villa at the top so you can try them all out. There are some restaurants along the main road at the bottom of the hill but from what I can remember they are quite spread out & you would need a car.

Hope this helps...although you may have sorted something out by now !

Does anyone know Ozankoy? We are in Cyrus for 2 weeks from 22 March, the rental villa I like best is apparently walking distance to the village centre.

We do want to hire a car for some of the time, but want to spend a few days at the begining and end just by the pool. Are there many restaurants, cafes , food shops in the village?

Just for future reference, Ozankoy is literally only a few minutes from Kyrenia central where there are bars and restaurants all over, and particularly around the harbour. The village has a few bars and restaurants of its own frequented by mostly Brits along with a few English speaking locals, and convenience stores, with major supermarkets about a mile away (less distance depending where you stay but if you are very close you will not have much of a sea view as the main supermarkets are down on the coast road, whilst the village itself is elevated), and is very much a village of choice for permanent British residents and those with holiday homes who know North Cyprus well.. Location location springs to mind. Ozankoy village is quiet and very Cypriot and on the local dolmus bus route and takes just 5 to 10 minutes in to Kyrenia central, and passes many more restaurants, bars, supermarkets, casinos on route, whilst it stops to pick up passengers too.

Esentepe is some miles out and you definitely need a car (watch out for all the speed cameras). The village is up a big hill. Down near the sea are some pretty isolated big concrete jungles of apartments and frankly not much around either, bar empty and half built buildings, and the odd restaurant spread far apart.... Cheap to rent out there, but bit like staying in Milton Keynes when you really want to stay in London. There is no public transport, so you need a car or taxis (will cost a lot from there to Kyrenia). Like another poster says if you rent a villa high up in village and want to stay in the village only and not go anywhere then fine! Esentepe is also the location of the Korenium Golf Club, but you need a car just to drive up to it... It has a long drive and is not near the village central! Turtle Beach is not far from Esentepe, but again you need a car to get there too. It is at Alagadi.

It depends on what you are looking for but I would far rather stay in Esentepe than Kyrenia. I love the peace and quiet and the lack of commercialism. Long may it stay that way.
