Website for directions and distances in Reykjavik

Is there any websites that provides directions and distances between locations in Reykjavik similar to what mapquest does? It seems that mapquest and google don't support Reykjavik.

Sometimes I wonder if people have not heard of GOOGLE !

I Googled "reykjavik map", and got many maps of the city,

Including this one: http://www.tagzania.com/item/5349 So please use Google, it´s the easiest and fastest way, usually.

B-)

Sometimes I wonder if people even read the post before replying to it. I'm looking for something like mapquest or google map which support directions between locations.

Is this the sort of thing you want? http://www.maplandia.com/iceland/

I'm not aware of any system that gives directions / distances within Reykjavík, other than satellite navigation systems. For a small city which is fairly logically laid out I wouldn't have thought it would make economic sense.

Here is the point, I have no idea how big is Reykjavik. I am attending a conference in October and trying to find the hotels within the walking distance of the conference venue. That's why I thought if there is anything like mapquest that provides this information on the web so that I just put the address of the two locations and it provides the direction and walking/driving distance between the two.

I had a look on the Web and found http://world.maporama.com/Default.aspx which accepted my input from my office to my home without the use of Icelandic characters, but I have my doubts over its accuracy. It calculated 12 km distance (more like 18km) and told me that I could drive it in 6 minutes at an average speed of 100kph. Oh yes, it routed me a longer way than I would normally drive, so perhaps it's more like 22km. The speed limits vary from 50kph to 80kph so if I followed these instructions I imagine that I would be on the receiving end of one or more tickets!

This map has a scale and may help you get an idea of distances exploreiceland.is/city_guide/…

Similarly this http://www.os.is/~or/rev/Map_of_Rvk.png

And this

You can get accurate distances on this http://www.borgarvefsja.is/bvs.html but it's a bit tricky. Ignore the left-hand menu; zoom in/out using "+/-" and then click "m" to obtain a distance cursor. Click your starting point and then plot each turn / junction by clicking until you get to your destination - this device measures straight lines only but gives you a running total. Clear it by hitting the refresh button (circular arrow). You can use the search box to enter addresses but these have to be correctly formatted in Icelandic.

At visitreykjavik.is/desktopdefault.aspx/… you can get a location map for each hotel - just click through and it will be clear.

Rayottawa, in addition to all the links posted so far, here is another.

This is a low tech, segmented map of Reykjavik. You can go to the index block, look up the street name, and it will reference you to the appropiate block on the map.

http://www.backman.is/mapofrvk/

Perhaps you can start with finding your conference location on this map, and then searching for hotels from there.

The central area of Reykjavik is not that big, and most everything is "walkable".

The real question for you, being there in October, is will the weather permit walking? Perhaps that sounds strange, but if you have never been there, you have not experienced the unusual nature of Iceland's weather.

As a frequent tourist to Iceland, I have been there in October and experienced mild, fall season conditions. I have also been there in October when a storm has moved in from the North Atlantic with horrific winds and drenching rains. Forget an umbrella, during a storm the rain is horizontal.

Now for tourists, a storm like that can be a disruption in planned activities. For you, going to a conference, it means possibly getting there soaked to the bone, unless you took a taxi.

As I sense you have never been to Iceland before, I thought you should have an idea of the different conditions you face.

Finding a "walkable" hotel is a great idea, but please do consider that Icelandic weather may preclude you from making the walk.

Iceland is a great place and I think you will have an enjoyable time there. With Iceland, weather is always the wild card, and you never know what to expect.

FrozenBaz, thanks for the links. I found map24 very useful since it maps all the hotels too and gives a clear idea where thigs are located.

drr49, Thanks for the headsup. Living in Ottawa/Canada I exactly understand what you mean and I guess I should consider this fact when booking the hotel.

Sometimes its easier to answer the question, if people spell out what they want.

You don't actually want a website that gives directions.....

You really want a hotel that's close to your conference. Simply asking for hotels near to XXX conference centre would have saved effort looking for map sites by helpful people.

I'm not Rayottawa, but I want to thank everyone for the map links. I'm planning a visit at the end of November and a pal in Reykjavik 111 has offered to let me stay at her place, which I knew was well outside the city center but had I no clue about actual distances. Between the backman.is site that drr49 posted (I knew about that one already) and the borgarvefsja.is site that FrozenBaz posted, I now have an idea of how far out it is (which is not too bad, I think).
