Best Day Hikes in Iceland--Your List of Favorites

My wife and I are planning a self-drive trip around Iceland that will last about two weeks (including two or three days in Reykjavik)in July or August. We are interested in doing day hikes (as opposed to overnight camping hikes) that will expose us to the best natural wonders Iceland has to offer. We would envision going to several small towns or villages for two or three days each using a guest house or a modest hotel at each location as a home base from which to drive to hiking locales. Thus, my queries:

1. In a drive around Iceland, from Reykjavik and return, what would be your advice about the best three to five destinations to serve as the base for several days of hiking (hikes of 3-10 kilometers, depending on terrain) at each?

2. What is your list of favorite hiking areas or hikes in Iceland? (We'd be especially interested in your "not to be missed" suggestions.)

Many thanks.

I was a little confused that you asked for 'day hikes' and then said 3-10km. However here were three we enjoyed greatly, all on good paths.

Skaftafell National Park beyond Sjónarnípa up the side of the glacier towards the mountain of Kristínartindar, across the plateau of Flár and round the foot of the mountain, Fremrihnaukur then above Morsádaluron the return. Described here: http://tinyurl.com/26z23s

Vesturdalur in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. South through Vesturdalur to Svinadalur to return north along the rim of the Jökulsá gorge. Then north through Hljódaklettar to go up to the viewpoint of Raudholár then return. Described here: http://tinyurl.com/ynuloo

Both of these are very good days.

A shorter one is at Krafla near Myvatn through the springs and lavaflows at Leirhnjúkur. Described here: http://tinyurl.com/yo6ple

My three favorite places, with hiking in mind, would be:

Skaftafell area, with the claciers, hikes of aal categories, long or short. Probably the best view in Europe!

The Mývatn area: Here you have a diversity of hikes in the jewel of Iceland. No one is the same, after spending few days here.

The Landmannalaugar area: The favorite of hikers all over the world. Unbeliveable colored mountains and steaming valleys, not to forget the hot pools.

All these places have good campsites and cottages, with all facilities.

Here is one website for you: www.landmannalaugar.info
