Reykjavik > Isafjordur 7 day trip -- Is it practical?

We're planning a 7 day trip from Reykajvik up through the Westfjords and are thinking of the following itinerary:

Day 1 Reykajvik

Day 2 Stykkisholmer

Day 3 and 4 Isafjordur

Day 5 Latrabjarg

Day 6 Reykajvik

Day 7 Leave for home

Would appreciate any feedback on whether the travel times between destinations are reasonable particulary btw Stykkisholmer and Isafjordur and then btw Isafjordur and Latrabjarg. and Latrabjarg and Reykajvik Also, if we rent a regular (non-4x4) car, will we be OK? We'll be there May 21st to 27th

Day 3 - the ferry Baldur (remember to book in advance!) arrives at Brjánslækur at 18:00 which means that you will not arrive in Ísafjörður much before 21:00 that evening, later if you stop anywhere for more than a few minutes. There's not much you can do about that as there is only an afternoon ferry during May.

Day 5 - the drive from Ísafjörður to Látrabjarg will take you something over 5 hours without stops.

Day 6 - your will arrive in Stykkishólmur shortly before 21:00 and should be in Reykjavík at around 23:00.

Unless there's unusually harsh weather - which is till possible in late May - a 2WD will be ok

Thanks FrozenBaz! That is great information. Do you know how long it takes to drive from Isafjordur to Holmavik? We're thinking that may be another option too.

Also, if we decided not to venture up to Isafjodur and just to hang around Latrabarg for a few days, would there be enough to see and do? Or would we be missing out on some key Westfjords activities?

Thanks so much!

Ísafjörður to Hólmavík is 225km all on tar. Say 3-3½ hours without stops.

Whilst the scenery is stunning, you might find three days around Látrabjarg to be a bit much, and you would be missing so much. What about :

Day 3 to Hotel Látrabjarg (or wherever else you had in mind)

Day 4 Around Látrabjarg

Day 5 Drive past Patreksförður to Bíldudalur. At Bildudalur, possibly take a side trip along the fjord - drive through Bildudalur and keep going to the west. westfjords.is/WhattoSeeDo/AttractionView/ket… and westfjords.is/WhattoSeeDo/AttractionView/sam… and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sel%C3%A1rdalur and icelandtotal.com/about-iceland/… - allow at least one hour for the drive there and back plus 30 minutes or so at the site.

Then continue on road no. 63, then 60 to Dynjandi, returning the same way on 60, then 62 to www.flokalundur.is/default.asp…

Take a look at http://www.westfjords.is/ for detailed information on the est Fjords
