Route 1 Tour

Trying to plan a trip to drive the entire Route 1 loop in approximately 12 days. Any information regarding the miles between areas for overnights is appreciated. Most self drive itineraries offered by companies have you in a different accommodation each night. Is one day in each area an ideal timeframe. One tour did have a 2 night stint in the Westfjords area. thanx in advance...

A quote from Wikipedia: "The total length of the road is 1,339 kilometres (832 mi)." Very likely, you've seen this already... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_1_(Iceland)

Best regards,

Have a look at a few tour specialist sites and they will give you an idea of itineraries.

Try Discover the World, they specialise in Iceland or Icelandic Farm holidays. Both have self drive itineraries.

What I find wrong, is that "Icelandic farm holidays" is not really what they claim to be.

Probably over 70% of their accommodations are NOT working farms, but more like countryside Hotels / Motels. They even have hotel buildings in towns and villages, and call that "Farm stay" !

Make sure it is a real "Farm stay" if that is what you´re after, if not then this really doesn´t matter.

We've done enough road touring, though not Iceland yet, to know that we much prefer stays of 2 nights, though of course that means doubled driving on those days when you make routewise progress. Tour companies want to cover all the bases in marketing where you'll stay; we prefer to halve packing/unpacking/orientation/last mile time. But YMMV. If you were round-tripping over 12 days NYC to Niagara Falls (with Wesfjords analogizing to an added loop up into Canada), all on slow rural back roads, how many lodgings would you prefer?

If I was going to include the west fjords, and was coming from the east, I would take minimum of four nights and four days to do it.

First and second night i would stay in Drangsnes (one of those less known gems in Iceland´s nature), the third in Ísafjordur, and the fourth in Breidavík. And this is minimum !

The itinerary would be:

Day one: Drangsnes - north to Norðurfjörður and back in one long day, Stay again in Drangsnes.

Day two: Drangsnes to Ísafjörður, arriva at Ísafjörður in the early afternoon, and spend the rest of the day in the area, visiting the many places all around, or taking an afternoon tour to the island of Vigur.

Day three: Ísafjörður to Dynjandi and Látrabjarg, stopping in the many places that are along the route. stay in Breiðavík.

Day four: Breiðavík to Stykkishólmur, either by ferry or by driving the photogenic route. Stay in Snæfellsnes area.

And this is absolutely minimum time in my opinion. Anything else is just "scratching the surface".

Thank you to everyone for all the great information. I'm trying to decide if it is better to drive each day understanding it is about the journey and the destination or stay a few days in places and unpack less. Like with many trips some spots warrant more time. We may want to do some excursions offered so is it wise to drive each day and expect to do whatever is offered such as a hike, horseback ride, etc. distance between places, from what I have read may be 150 miles or so but not sure I'm accurate as I have read quite a bit in a short time. Might be nice to know which stops are good for 1 day. I know Westfjords multiple days are recommended.

Also wondering if activities need to be booked ahead since we would like to go in July or can we find availability once we are there.

Many thanks to all!

We drove the ring road over 7 days in Nov and stayed at a different location every night. You can see from my reviews where we stayed with a night each end in Keflavik and 2nd night at a Hotel Vik (unable to review).

I would say this is the minimum in winter for the journey and we had 3 drivers, admittedly with lots of photography stops.

In summer there are far more activities available and with more time you can take advantage of these but if you take icelandguide's west fjord advise you won't have many spare days and we didn't visit the snaefells peninsula either! In particular Lake Myvatn and the Vatnajokull glacier.
