Golden Circle without ending in Reykjavik

I was just wondering what the best order or route to do the Golden Circle would be when I'm not coming back to Reykjavik. We are starting there but ending in Arnes and would love see kerid Crater on route too. It just seems out of the way compare to the other stops. Any suggestions?

Thanks

It is maybe a little out of the way but you can start with a visit to Thingvellir and drive to Kerid via roads 36 and 35 and then continue via 35 to Geysir and Gullfoss (or via 35 and 37 if you want to look at Laugarvatn on the way)

You can then continue to Arnes via road 30 and 32 or (if you do mind the small stretch of gravel on the northern end of road 30) you can return on the 35 and then use the 359 to get to road 30 just north of Fludir and continue to Arnes from there.

It depends a bit on whether you want to catch Hveragerdi and the geothermal power plant Hellesheidivirkjun on this part of the tour, too. If you do (e.g., this is the first part of a Ring Road tour, and you're not coming back along the south Ring Road), then you could also pick up these two stops along the Ring Road then cut northeast on 35 to Kerith, before backtracking about 5 km to meet route 36 north up to Thingvellir.

If you want to see a bit more of Thingvallavatn, or overlook the powerplant at Nesjavellir (Nesjavallavirkjun) you can even head across the (partly-gravel) route 360 and loop around the west side of Thingvallavatn. (Trust me, this all makes more sense when you have a road map in front of you.) When you leave Thingvellir, you're back on the regular Golden Circle track to Geysir and Gullfoss.
