Kuku Campers

I just returned from a 10 day trip and rented with Kuku Campers to travel around the country. They have very reasonable rental rates and were very professional and helpful. I was able to avoid paying for a hotel and as a photographer I could camp out at all of the great photo spots and be there when the light was best!

I came back last Friday from a 10 day road trip in Iceland with a Category C Kukucamper and it was fantastic. We took the extra gravel insurance to be safe. We did not have any problem with the vehicle even though it was older than what you'd get from the major rental companies. Dealing with the people at Kuku what extremely easy. The heating unit was a godsend to get relief from the rain and the cold.

I would recommend them without hesitation.

Renting from Kuku was one of the BEST decisions we made on our 8 day trip. There is no better way to experience Iceland in a short time. We saw so much, had complete independence, and were provided with everything we needed. It was perfect. They couldn't have been easier to work with and the price was amazing in comparison to other rental companies. We had a fabulous experience with Kuku Campers and would recommend it to everyone!

DO NOT RISK IT RENT ELSEWHERE:

I just returned from a 2 week trip driving around Iceland in a Kuku Camper. We rented on of their cheaper options and we were ultimately disappointed. First let me say that is company is insanely busy and horribly understaffed. If you want to see a company taking full advantage of the icelandic tourist gold rush, this is it. It is one thing to rent a crappy car out for a cheap price but its another to have a car that barely works . The staff is incredibly nice and really do their best to deal with a poorly run operation. There is little to no time for any maintenance on the cars and therefor the responsibility falls on the customers. We got our car and were told immediately that we would have to get the tires changed. (I found out later that the car had been returned 30 minutes prior to us picking it up. Which makes sense as the car was still completely covered in mud.) It was Sunday so this would require us to stay a night in Reykjavik (that we had not planned to do) and spend our morning in a tire shop. This is obviously not what you want to do on your first day of vacation. The gentleman taking care of us was super nice and did his best by offering us free accessories. Our tire situation was eventually remedied by a friend who happened to know the owner of the company. After contacting him they fixed our tires immediately. They claim that all their cars are 2005 or newer, however our car had a TAPE DECK and was definitely older. Our doors did not lock properly. One of the back passenger side doors was duck taped I think as a remedy (that did not work). My Ipod got stolen out of car because the doors would not properly lock. The back door would lock but would not close completely causing a massive leak. Making our sleeping space soaking wet every time it would rain. Our car would barely go up hills and would often times not go into gear when stopped (which is dangerous) .

This company is cheap which is great but you are taking a great risk by renting from them. I will in the future and would RECOMMEND PAYING SLIGHTLY MORE AND RENT FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

We rented a camper van for 4 people to go on the typical ring road tour of Iceland. Our experience was, so to say, difficult. In the first place we were kept waiting at the airport -we had arrange a transfer but there was a mixup and nobody knew we were there. We had to buy a local phone card and call them, which meant losing more than one hour. They did offer compensation for this. Then, we were given our campervan which unfortunately we did not check thoroughly. It was quite old and we were warned to be careful when going downhill, i.e. press the brakes intermittently which we thought was just a characteristic of the van. However, the drivers found it harder and harder to brake, and on the second day there was some warning light about lack of brake fluid. We were told to go and get some somewhere and replace it ourselves but that didn't work either as the van lost all the liquid -we finally had to call them again and finally the owner himself came over with another van. This meant waiting for 4 hours in the middle of nowhere, in a windy spot where we couldn't even go to the toilet (so to say), A truly bad experience on the second day. The owner apologized and said he'd look into the issue and give us compensation. Things did not end there as a few days later we got a flat tyre. We went to a garage (after making many calls, etc for them to find us one) and they said actually both front tyres needed replacing as they were really old and in bad condition -we were lucky after all!. This proved again safety standards were quite low -in the first van it looked like nobody had checked it before giving it to us, or if they did they just didn't mind. So it's not just wasting our time but putting our lives in danger -Icelandinc roads DO need good brakes and tyres! On top of that there were many other things that made our lives difficult. Our frying pan was totally impossible to use as the teflon cover was virtually inexistent. We had another small pan for 2 -we were 4 which meant cooking took ages. The can opener didn't work. We rented a bbq but when we were about to make our first meal on it, we discovered the grill wasn't there -we had to throw away kilos of meat. The fridge was small and noisy, the water tank in the first van had a problem and was hard to refill, one of the sleeping bags had a broken zip... lots of details of the sort. When we gave back the van we got a good discount and we considered the issue settled. In conclusion:

Do they respond when there are troubles? Yes.

But -there shouldn't be troubles. You want things to work, not to have to find solutions all the time.

Would we give them a second chance? It depends. I advice you check your vehicle carefully before accepting it.

It is just too bad that many of these campervan companies in Iceland take advantage of tourists by claiming damages or providing unsafe vehicles i.e. Poor tire tread, serious engine problems, doors that dont close or lock properly. I was going to rent a campervan but decided to go with a rental car instead. There are poor reviews on Happy Campers, Go Campers/Campervan Iceland and now Kuku Campers. Can't they get their businesses together and run an honest ship? My biggest fear is the $500-$2,000 " damages" they claim I may have done. Read these reviews carefully, not just here but also on Lonely Planet. If they are called out on their current poor business practices, then perhaps they will stop gauging the faithful campervan renter. I dont want to help support their friends and family by paying up to $2,000 for a minor scratch that may have been there before I got the campervan and this even with the super insurance package. This potential campervan renter is shying away!

If you're reading this and even remotely thinking about renting a Kúkú for your Iceland adventure, stop now and book it. Seriously. They're that good.

We rented a Kúkú for our 5 day adventure around Iceland's Ring Road. Our Kúkú, which we named "Polar," carried us, all of our gear, food, and bed through rain, fog, dirt roads, and 70+ mph winds without a hiccup. The campers are set up ingeniously. There's a storage unit that sits on the back of the camper holding three huge bins that securely hold all your cooking equipment, your bags, and a ton of food (we only went to the grocery store once during our trip). It also doubles as a privacy screen. The gas mileage was also great, which helps a lot if you're trying to keep the cost of your trip reasonable.

If we could give Kúkú's customer service more than a five stars, we would. From the initial inquiry emails asking for more details before renting to replying almost instantly while we were actually in Iceland, to providing us with extra sleeping bags to keep us warm (for free!) - they were truly a pleasure to rent from. We even needed to keep the car longer since we booked our tickets late for the Blue Lagoon and miscalculated the time we'd need to drop it off - they quickly replied that it was not a problem and we were able to enjoy our afternoon without stressing about the time.

Lastly, one of the coolest factors of renting a Kúkú was that they instantly made you part of a travel community. Any other Kúkú camper we passed along the way (they're easy to spot) would give you a thumbs up or a wave and even help out with anything. All the campers have unique and humorous art that even made locals laugh.

The only thing we'd mention is that if you're a taller person, you may want to spring for their bigger campers. It'd be a tight fit for someone taller than 6ft. We were two people around 5'7" and fit super comfortably in the back.

Truly, if you are looking for an awesome, comfortable, and stress free trip we couldn't more highly recommend Kúkú Campers!

Thank you Kuku, we've had an unforgettable/amazing/incredible trip... (AaW can't believe it is over!).

We rented a Kuku category C for 4 people (this Kuku is really big enough for 4 people) in September. We went around the ring road during 9 days. We received some nice explanations and tips and things to see/to do from the Kuku team. We had no problem with the van during our trip.

What we liked most? The fact that you can basically park for one night (almost) anywhere. At night, search the Northern lights, in the morning, just open the curtains when you wake up and enjoy the view.

The rental of a camper van is not cheap but... it it is then your bed, your car, your kitchen. Quite practical. And in the end and very good value for the price!

Kuku was for us the best way to explore Iceland!

Thank you for the great experience and the super nice and friendly service!

Cheers from Belgium!

Hi JSLinNYC, my partner and I are doing a week on the ring road in November and also really love inside showers and toilets 😂. What was your experience like with campsites? Did you plan ahead and book them or is it ok to just show up? Are they few and far between or easy to find and littered everywhere? What were the campsite fees like? I know November may be a different situation altogether in relation to the campsites but I'd love to hear any suggestions you have!

Thanks, Danielle

I took an 8 day trip to Iceland August 2015 and our camper van from KukuCampers made the trip! It wouldn't have been the same without it! We had the freedom to explore the entire country on our own time and spend more time where we preferred without having to search for our hotel! We got the AB camper which is perfect for 2 people. there is a foam board lining the back of the van which was actually very comfortable! We brought two sleeping bags open (one on bottom, one on top). Although there were camping supplies available, we preferred to go out to eat or have foods that didn't require cooking (it was very windy when we went and we never knew if it would be raining). We were very pleased with this van... at the campsites, I was so happy not to be in a tent getting whipped back and forth by the wind. The campsite facilities (average about $10 per person) are a little below average, but we stopped at some pools and hot springs for showers/bathing anyhow. Overall, I would highly recommend this method of traveling in Iceland! My boyfriend had never "camped" before and he loved the van! The company was great and friendly. Just make sure to vacuum out the van (at local gas station) prior to returning the vehicle as they are pretty strict about that.
