Kuku Campers

I just returned from a 10 day trip and rented with Kuku Campers to travel around the country. They have very reasonable rental rates and were very professional and helpful. I was able to avoid paying for a hotel and as a photographer I could camp out at all of the great photo spots and be there when the light was best!

Lots of companies encourage their users to post. See all the Groupon posters in the threads about the agency involved.

Hi, we are heading to Iceland beggining June and we have a used Camper Van Category A rented from Kuku Campers. We were wondering if we should upgrade to a new Camper Van AA which we were told can go on gravel roads. Has anyone here rented the new or old Camper Van, and if so, what do you think we should do? I am not sure even if the AA can go on gravel roads, it probably ain't allowed on F roads? I will have to ask.

Jean-Claude, you can't drive on F-roads unless you have 4 wheel drive, so the A, AA, or AB campers couldn't do that. Any car can drive on gravel roads though, you just have to be cautious and careful. Take it slow. I read their page about their cars and I think the AA is actually the automatic version, so you might want to check that. I think you're maybe meaning AB if you're wanting an upgraded manual. If you can drive manual I would always recommend it over automatic because you get so much more control and it will definitely help you on gravel roads and steep inclines.

My husband and I are planning our trip to Iceland from June 3-June 19th. Obviously we have allotted a good amount of time for this road trip because we are the adventurous type and will want to stop and explore often.

We rented a camper van from Kuku Campers. In general, we are not planning on staying at campsites, except to wash dishes and shower. However, for those who have done a similar trip, did you plan in advance which campsites you were going to stop at along the way? Or did you just stop when you saw one and it was convenient?

Additionally, we would love to do some trekking in Thorsmork and Landmannalaugar respectively. However, because we are in a camper van, we do not have 4WD and understand we will probably need to take the bus there. We have read that some have taken the bus from campsites, others from cities. What seems to work the best? And did you just leave your camper van for a night if you decided to camp in either of those places? Is camping there possible?

Would love any and all advice. Thanks!

Does anyone know the best place to park our Kuku Camper Van in Reykjavik for the day?

We had a great experience with KuKu Campers. They met us at the airport and took us to their garage to pick up the van. Whilst at the garage they showed us some great spots to go whilst on the road. We hired the van for 7 nights, and mainly followed the Ring Road. Hiring the van was definitely the way to go! To add to that, the van looked fantastic; it was a bright organge Volkswagen. We were traveling with three people and we had SO much room. Hiring a camper van from KuKu Campers was a great decision. We had no dramas with the car and the staff at kuku campers are extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommended, would definitely rent from them again.

ATTENTION!!, DO NOT RENT TO THIS PEOPLE!! THEY ARE A BUNCH OF SWINDLERS!! Check below explanation:

I was in Iceland last August with a couple of friends. We rented the 4x4 car under a reasonable price (with our late planning we did not have so many further options to be honest). Regrettably we had an small accident during the trip. We were hit by another car on the back. After the accident, police came and a report was created about it (in Icelandic language). Luckily we could finish our trip and when came back to Reykjavik, we had a meeting with ‘chief executive’ of the company, Mr. Lárus Guðbjartsson. We were said, the police report was not clear at all, and that a witness apparently saw us coming backwards on a main road (something completely false and technically impossible). Therefore we were requested to paid 2.000 extra euros. They told us not to worry about it, cause on the worst case scenario at least half of the quantity could be recovered by the insurance company, considering there were also clear evidences demonstrating our version was the right one. After that, we prepared a whole report, with pictures, and explaining clearly what it happened as per we were requested. There shouldn´t be doubts about it.

We came back home, and after that I had to be literally chasing Mr. Lárus, with continuous telephone calls, emails, etc. etc. asking for news and progress, many times not receiving any answer and only after my persistence, getting some info from the other side. After this hard and exhausting period (5 -6 months), and only once we announced we were ready to come back to Iceland to deal with this issue personally, they finally came back to us saying that 1.000 euros have been recovered, and that they needed our bank number to make the money back transfer. This was 4 months ago, and in spite of our continuous emails and calls they were out of the picture again. NO MONEY HAS BEEN RECOVERED.

Today, 10 months after the visit, we seriously doubt Mr. Larus version was true at all, and I really think they´ve been playing with us to make the operation as profitable as possible for Kuku Campers. I´m sure they were totally covered by the insurance of the car (in case they might have had to paid something, cause again it was not our fault at all).

It is funny, after this experience, I found several similar opinions/experiences in Internet about them.

Hopefully this experience serves for upcoming visitors to that wonderful and unique country. Do not rent to this people, behind that image of cool and modern company, this is the way they act, taking advantage of tourist and foreign customers. From our side, I just can add/stand, this will not be the end of the story.

Good luck and enjoy Iceland.

I recently returned from a 10-day trip driving the Ring Road in Iceland. We rented a KuKu AA Automatic camper van and it was excellent! Honestly, this was perfect for a budget-traveler! We drove on and off the Ring Road to the West Fjords (which was unpaved) and far east and our car never failed on us. Other than the random clicking noise from the engine (?) and car doors not locking from the remote, we never had any issues. The bed was comfy, and the "kitchen" out back was superb. We cooked dinner every night with the dishes/utensils and gas burner they provided. The set-up and organization of the "kitchen" was nice. We had other tourists ask us if we could show them the van. They were amazed.

I would highly recommend KuKu campers for everyone--families, couples, etc. The employees were nice and very welcoming. Thanks KuKu Campers!!
