2 days from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón and back, reasonable?

I really want to visit Jökulsárlón lagoon and some of the main attractions on the way along the south coast (from Reykjavik).

My problem is that i can only spare 2 days for the south trip. I only have 5 days, 1 for the city, another for the Golden Circle and the 3rd for the Peninsula (also a long day).

I'm not camping and i checked 2 possibilities so far:

Spending the night in Vik:

If i sleep in Vik the 1st day will be easy but the 2nd will be too long, i still have to reach Jökulsárlón and then all the way back to Reykjavik

Spending the night in Hofn:

If i sleep here both days will have around the same length of travel/visit, however, to reach Hofn i have to drive around 70km more just to spend the night there and then back.

Is there some decent lodging closer to Jökulsárlón?

Is this plan too ambitious? But i think Jökulsárlón should be worth it.

Stay around Skaftafell. There's a hotel and some farms/guest houses.

What time of year are you going?

Guesthouse Hali is extremely close to Jokulsarlon. It's a gorgeous place to stay.

There are other places nearby as well.

Look at Iceland Farm Holiday's map on their website to find guesthouses nearby.

I agree with the previous poster, driving back towards Skaftafell would probably save you some time on the second day.

Hofn is too far out of your way if you plan on driving back to Reykjavik.

One option is to drive the highlights of the Golden Circle (Thingvelir, Geysir, Gulfoss) yourself rather than going on a tour. Instead of driving back into Reykjavik drive down to the south coast, via Seljalandsfoss, and stay at Skogar or Vik. Then you are based so that you can get across to Jokulsarlon, and back, with less driving over the next couple of days.

You can get a lot of information from the organised tours, if they are good, but I prefer to get those few moments between coach tours at these great natural locations. It would be for you to choose.

I love Jokulsarlon so definitely recomend that you do try to get there. The drive areound the SE corner is just stunning scenery as well. You don't need to go to Hofn, if you want to stay near Jokulsarlon then you have guesthouses Hali or Gerdi.

Why not camp.

One of the best campgrounds in Iceland is in Skaftafell N.P.

I like the last suggestion. However, if you have just the 2 days, consider that some people do Jökulsárlón as a single day trip from Reykjavik by bus. So realistically you could drive straight to Jökulsárlón on your first day and do the boat trip (try to resist stopping too much along the way); perhaps return to the Skaftafell area to spend the night (you will probably have time to explore the park). Then the 2nd day work your way back towards Reykjavik as you like.

Remember that even at the end of August, you have daylight until at least 9 PM.

Sorry if my train of thought was not quite clear, but the point is, it is quite reasonable in 2 days, really. Camping is a great idea if you can.

The third week of August will be easy to find accommodation.
