Iceland in late February - unsure about what to wear

We've got two nights in Reyjavik, and two nights in the Golden Circle. We're on an escorted tour with Kuoni. I've been keeping an eye on the current weather, and it doesn't seem much colder than the UK at present. Obviously we're taking thick jackets, fleeces, layers and thermals, but will jeans be ok for day time, or would something like salopettes be better, or even walking trousers with thermal leggings underneath? I'm also taking one pair of snow boots and one pair of walking boots.

Any helpful hints?

No jeans, If they get wet you will be miserable and how will you ever dry them out? You need a pair of water proof pants to pull over whatever else you layer,

Jeans are not good. It usually rains and snows sideways here, so trousers get wet quickly. Jeans are awful when wet.

Well, you can wear jeans, like we did, but you must have waterproof pants over them.

Whatever pants you do decide to wear, make sure that they are waterproof. Water-PROOF, not just water-RESISTANT. Water-resistant is just fine if you are walking in the rain from your car to your work/home/store, but it is not sufficient if you are going to be sightseeing the Iceland country for a whole day. It makes sense to be well prepared.

Before you go, test the waterproofing: get a bucket, stretch the fabric of the pants across it, pour several cups of water onto it, and see if within several hours any water gets through.

I wore jeans with thermal leggings underneath and was fine because I had a long down jacket past my knees, so I was mostly covered. My husband also wore jeans, but had a short jacket, so he got fairly soaked one day. I agree that waterproof pants are the way to go if you're going to be spending any considerable time outdoors.

Take waterproof trousers to put on over your jeans e.g. Ones golfers wear.
