Day trip outside helsinki

I'll be in helsinki this coming weekend and have hired a car with the view of heading out of town on the Sunday. Can anyone suggest somewhere to visit for the day? I've considered porvoo or fiskars, would anything be open in either of these towns on a Sunday? Or should I consider elsewhere.

Would also be keen to drive around the islands on the archipelago if possible and take in some scenery.

You can't really drive around the islands around Helsinki, for that you'd have to head to Turku archipelago, but even that would be more worthwile in summer: www.saaristonrengastie.fi/index.php?page=8

Fiskars is a nice place also on winter Sundays. Many shops, ateliers etc. will be open from approx. noon to 4 or 5 pm. See further and check the exact opening hours at http://www.fiskarsvillage.fi/en

In Porvoo the shops and boutiques are not that regularly open on winter Sundays. You can check the opening hours at http://www.visitporvoo.fi/en .

If you have the car go for Fiskars.

Porvoo is easily reached by bus and one hardly needs a car when there.

This is a tricky one cause you don't mention your interests. Do you fancy historical sights or do you prefer to the countryside?

Fiskars might be interesting although I have no personal experiences of that place. I would maybe recommend Hämeenlinna (http://visithameenlinna.fi/en) with its beautiful castle and lake area. Also Turku ( http://www.visitturku.fi/en ) is worth visiting.

Also, I would recommend Lappeenranta (not only because I live there, but because I know something about it ;) ). It's about 3 hour drive away from Helsinki. Especially during summer it really comes alive. It has an old fortress, lots of old, beautiful architecture and things to see. I love some of the cafés there, especially Majurska, an old-fashioned cute cafe. Also there's cute handicraft shops all over the town, especially in the fortress area and during summer there's a huge sandcastle with a different theme and little shops arounding it. Since we are talking about this coming Sunday, I'd give Lappeenranta a pass. Yes, agree with the arguments, but it's too far for a day trip esp in the middle of the winter.
