Hope you have found already something to eat. Try following local searchengines or try to look for a "City"-newspaper (also english version). Open Doors magazine also lists some good eateries.

www.eat.fi

www.ravintolaopas.fi

Here are some of my favorites for informal restaurants:

Benjam's Bistro, Dagmarinkatu 5, 00100 (Behind Parlament Building)

Memphis (opposite to your hotel at the basement of Sokos Hotel Vaakuna)

Vltava (lunch) a checz beerhouse with very good informal lunch (Lonely building/right in front of your hotel)

Manala, Dagmarinkatu 2, 00100 (Behind the parlament building)

At the basement of Kamppi-shopping mall you'll find good quality sushi, pasta etc for relatively low price.

If you continue towards south, the mall continues to another building, where they just opened a casual "food market" with handmade pasta, sushi, beef and gelato.

Hope that you enjoy your stay in our lovely city.

best regards,

My hints for eateries would be

- the Namaskaar Indian food chain, the closest to HI is at the Elielinaukio just where your hotel is. They have a couple of tables at the premises of you can take the food with you. Namaskaar has also a restaurant at the Sanomatalo glass building next to the hotel, but its more expensive (but good). Meals around 8 to 9 euro.

- Wayne's coffee serves soups, salads and lunch at least around 11-14 (lunchtime) the closest to you beeing at Sanomatalo and the main Post office building

- there are food courts at the basement of the Forum mall, at the Kamppi mall and at Fennia quarter (on the other side on the rw station and the rw square) with chinese, pizza, noodles, burgers, kebabs etc at 6 to 9 euros.

- pick up the City magazine or other restaurant listing and start exploring. There are really no bistro type restaurants in Finland due to our taxes on labour so anything resembling a restaurant starts at 15 euros / main course. The cheaper alternatives are pizza joints and chinese/eastern restaurants.

- As you get familiar with the surroundings soon, you might want to head towards the Kamppi area (Annankatu) or towards Punavuori, a couple of stops by tram (Uudenmaankatu and beyond)

- my favourite is the meze point on Mikonkatu/Aleksi http://www.meze.fi/eng/ Not too pricey, worth the money.

Hope this gets you started...
