Helsinki for New Years

A friend and I are flying in for the Helldone Festival this coming December, and looking for hotel recommendations - we don't want to break the bank, but we'd like to find something fairly nice. This is our first trip overseas together, so we're looking for a little romance along with the great music...~L~

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Fairly nice means that you don't want to be in a hostel; therefore I suggest that you look into 3 or 4 star hotels. Best way to find a suitable hotel is to use search engines on the internet, which you probably have done already... Here are a couple I would think of:

http://www.hotelliweb.fi/

http://helsinki.gtahotels.com/

And then few reasonably cheap hotels in the centrum:

or

I was thinking of heading to Helsinki for New Year this coming late December / early January, having had a nice, relaxing time in Tampere last time.

Are there enough diversions to enjoy in Helsinki for 4 or 5 days? Obviously with limited daylight and the probable cold, outdoor activities are likely to be limited, but is there attractive scenery nearby?

I suppose a day-trip to Tallin would always be possible, or we could do a slightly longer trip and spend 2 or 3 nights in both cities?

Is there anywhere else in Finland that is reasonably accessible that people know of as a good spot to see in the New Year?

Cheers for any advice you can give.

I would recommend HOTEL CUMULUS or Sokos was going for about 60€ last year and i reckon its not more than 75€ a night.

Hi there, a friend and i went to Helldone last year..well this year...06/07 New Year..and we stayed at Sokos Presidentti it was REALLY close to Tavastia, about 2 mins walk (through a warm shopping centre) the breakfast that was included was huuuuge. The decor inside the rooms needed updating...but i think that with most hotels i stay at. We booked through Fins-Tours and did the Helldone package. Although, if you plan on meeting fellow HIM-ers, dont stay at Sokos Presidentti, i think most people on a similar budget stayed at Helka, a tiny bit further away.

I hope you and your love have an AMAZING time, you will, it was so much fun! i wanted to go again this year, but I just cvant afford to fly their from Australia again :)

The biggest 3 chains in Finland are:

http://www.scandic-hotels.com/sitehomepage

You still get and can use Hilton HHonors points although Hilton no longer is an owner. (There are also 2 real Hiltons in Helsinki, Kalastajatorppa having a really fab location a few kms outside the city, about 15 mins tram away.)

www.sokoshotels.fi/SokotelWeb/Sokotel.portal…

https://www.hotellimaailma.fi/view.cfm…

They all have decent hotels in the center and during off season periods their prices are quite attractive.

I haven't been able to find anything to tell me how long it will take to get from Sydney to Helsinki.

I realise that I will need to stopover somewhere, and I think from Australia it is Singapore.

I would like to leave on the 29th December, but I dont know if this is enough time?

I also read a post in another thread I think where they mentioned that they booked a package specifically for the Helldone festival, and again couldn't find any information on that, or if it was still available for the coming year.

The only advice I can give you is to go to their homepage:

http://www.myspace.com/helldone

I think you should be able to find people there who are familiar with the arrangements.

As for your travel plan I suggest you talk to a local travel agency. It's a long journey so a stopover would probably be nice.
