arctic Ice Bar - will we have time?

On our cruise to the Baltic in 2 weeks' time, we would like to visit the Ice Bar. They open at 4 pm and we have to be back on the ship by 5.30 at the very latest (we would prefer 5 pm).

We know that the Ice bar is a short visit (20 - 30 minutes). We want to know how long it would take to get back to the ship docked at Hernasaari/Hanasaari (which spelling is it ?

We think the ice bar is just beside Esplanadi, so is there a taxi rank nearby?

Are taxis always available?

How long does it usually take to travel that distance?

Are there ever traffic jams on the road to Hernasaari?

The ship will not wait for us, so we HAVE to be back. If anyone thinks this journey is a risk, we will cancel the Ice Bar.

Any local knowledge will be very valuable

Hi!

Checked at the restaurant "La Bodega" where the exotic Arctic Ice Bar is in the basement.

You can make reservations for groups 6-15 persons by sending email to myyntipalvelu@labodega.fi

The Ice Bar is open 16:00 - to 23:30.

If you less than 6 persons, you just come there and wait. (You can also call to their sales service and ask about the situation +358 9 278 1855 on weekdays between 14-18 Finnish time).

The bar can unfortunately take max 15 persons at a time - so if your group is larger that that you need to divide into several groups of 15 and wait for the previous group to come out.

They have a website, but unfortunately it's only in Finnish www.labodega.fi/showPage.php?page_id=16

- Enjoy the pictures!

It cost 10 euro to get in, one icy vodka shot is included in the price.

- Hope this information will help you. :-)

You can press "translate this page" and a sort of translation comes out. They seem to have changed their web page since last year. I got an English version and had no difficulty booking for 4 pm - it was necessary to get back to the bus stop at 4.45 and catch the last shuttle back (there is plenty of time to get a taxi, but we wanted to be extra sure, missing the ship is a problem).

I would e mail them anyway - in English, they are fluent, explain why you want to book.

There are other ice bars though. A colleague came back from a cruise to the Baltic this week and she said she went in Copenhagen. Her kids loved it, they are young teenagers but they were given a shot of vodka anyway (they must have had a great day after that). She said that they opened earlier.

Don't forget that the whole ice bar experience is great fun. I am so glad we did it, but it is quick. You cannot stay at that temperature for more than 15 minutes. You get the best photos though.

Have fun

Were just in Helsinki last week and tried the Ice Bar. Were quite underwhelmed, to be honest. It's just a walk-in freezer in the basement of a Mexican restaurant. A good photo opportunity, but not much more than that.

Amen that! It's a total tourist trap. Still, if that's what people want... I'd recommend it to people who like Disney. No offence - some of my friends are in that category.
