Gothenburg Archipelago

We will have a Monday in Gothenburg when most museums and such are closed and are thinking of visiting the Archipelago for a few hours. Is it best just to take the public ferry, and what island would be nice for having lunch and strolling around?

Usually the Gothenburg Archipelago is divided into Northern and Southern Archipelago and the islands in them are reached from different ports on the mainland. The Southern Archipelago is more visitor friendly and picturesque, it's completely car free etc. Best way to experience it is to pack your own picnic ( make a visit to Saluhallen first and get some cheese, bread and cold cuts), take the no. 11 tram to Saltholmen and proceed with the ferry (included in the tram ticket) to one of the islands. There isn't much to "do" on the islands but strolling around, but it's a very special environment well worth half a day.

Do take in account the time it takes first to go with tram or bus to the port, then another ferry journey before you reach the island. Some of the ferries don'nt run very often so keep track of the schedule.

If you have less than 5 hours I suggest a stroll along the harbour and/or a ride on Älvsnabben instead. Röda sten just below the Älvsborgsbridge is an interesting place to visit.

A third option is a visit to Älvsborgs fortress, more info here

I would definitely recommend a lunch at Pensionat Styrsö Skäret (http://www.pensionatskaret.se/english/), followed by a nice stroll on Styrsö which is one of the biggest islands in the archipelago. There are nice treks that let you take in the beautiful nature and the architecture is very picturesque.
