Copenhagen to Gothenburg

Want to go from Copenhagen to Gothenburg in July. Are we best to fly, take a train or drive? How long of a drive is it if we rent a car? I should know this, but what side of the road do you drive on? Is it an easy route to drive with not alot of turns to get lost? If we take a train, how much luggage are you allowed to bring? Plane would probably be our last option because we are going to be on alot of planes prior to getting to Copenhagen. Plus by the time you check in 2 hours early I'm not sure we are saving time.

Unless you're connecting from an incoming flight into Copenhagen I would not recommend flying. Best choice would be either the train or to rent a car, and that choice really depends on what's most convenient for you. For instance:

Do you need a rental car before or after the drive? Do you want to do some sightseeing along the way? If the answer is 'no' to both questions, then you're better off taking the train. And if the answer is 'yes' to one of the questions, you should probably rent a car.

Traffic in Denmark and Sweden is on the right, just like the USA. You will have about a four hour drive from Copenhagen to Gothenburg. That's just the driving time, and it depends a bit on where in Copenhagen you start out. You should drive across the bridge between Denmark and Sweden. The other choice would be to head north out of Copenhagen and take the 20 minute ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg. Distance somewhat shorter, but more complications since you have to wait a bit for the ferry. In other words, no time saved.

Anyway, my recommendation: follow Highway E20 from Copenhagen through the tunnel and across the bridge, and then the entire way to Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish). It's a freeway the entire distance. As long as you pay attention to signs with "Göteborg" and "E20" you'll be fine. And just so you don't get confused, Highway E6 along this stretch is identical to E20. In other words, it is one and the same freeway here. (North of Gothenburg, E6 and E20 will split up and go in different directions).

If you take the train, bring as much luggage as you can carry! The website of the Swedish Railway system:

Make sure you go to the English version!

Forgot one of the "slashes" in that website address, and can only edit once...:

Thank you for the great info. We will be flying into Copenhagen from Venice Italy, staying for 2 nights, then driving to Gothenburg. (have to be there for an ice hockey tournament) Do you know which rental car companies will let me rent in Copenhagen and drop off in Gothenburg? Another stupid question, what time does the sun come up in July? If we can leave early enough we will have time for stops along the way. We have to be at hotel in Gothenburg (actually Kungsbacka is where the hotel is located) at 2pm.

Sorry, have no clue about car rental companies. Check with your local companies.

Sunrise in Copenhagen:

01 July: 4:30 a.m.

31 July 5:13 a.m.

(So, obviously will be a minute or two later each day as you get further into the month. Sunrise in Gothenburg will be a bit earlier).

Sunset (01 July) is 9:57 p.m. and 31 July, 9:19 p.m. Will be a bit later in the Gothenburg area.

Kungsbacka, as you probably already know, is south of Gothenburg so you'll get there before you get to Gothenburg.

I think both Avis and Hertz have pick-up at Kastrup and drop-off in Gothenburg.

We usually rent through Avis.
