Is it worth staying in the Abisko National Park?
Save

Hello

My boyfriend and I are coming to Sweden Oct 3rd - 7th. We will be in Stockholm for the first night and the last 2 nights.

We want to go up North for the middle of the trip and hopefully see the Northern Lights...fingers crossed! Any advice where this may be possible would be great!

So far, we think we will go to Gallivare for 2 nights, then Kiruna or Abisko for 2 nights.

Is it worth paying the extra to stay in Abisko National Park or should we just stay in Kiruna?

Any advice of hostels, places, trips etc would be appreciated. We are on a tight budget so the cheaper the better. But saying that we may never go to Sweden again so dont want to miss out on things either.

Please let us know what you think.

Thank you very much

I have used tripadvisor before and always found it very helpful.

Thanks in advance

Danielle.

Hi,

I've never been to Abisko in October.

And it depends a little what you are after.

But, I would think it would be worth it.

Abisko is in the middle of the mountains, in the middle of the wilderness.

Kiruna is just a town.

Google a little for pictures of Abisko, Lapporten and Kiruna and you see.

That said, October is not the most busy season, so services and activities are more limited than in summer or winter.

Which means you might need to research a little to figure out for example where to find food. I think there is a grocery store near the research station, but I am not 100% sure.

You could stay at Abisko Turiststation, (Abisko Mountain lodge) run by Svenska Turistföreningen, Swedish touring club.

http://www.svenskaturistforeningen.se/en/Discover-Sweden/Facilities-and-activities/Lappland/Fjallstationer/STF-Mountain-station-Abisko/

370 sek / nigth / person if you are not a member, 270 sek if you are, for bunk bed accomodation. I am uncertain whether also an IYHF membership entitles you to the lower price.

I think that there is a self service kitchen, but that the restaurant is not open in October.

There are also other accomodation alternatives, but I am uncertain which are open in October. There seems to be a place called Abisko mountain lodge, that is not the same as Abisko Turiststation.

Sorry, me again. I see this was a bit muddled.

Abisko Turiststation, calls itself Abisko Mountain Station, on their English website.

But there is also a place called Abisko Mountain Lodge, which is a different establishment.

I stayed at the Turist station in mid-August and it was fantastic . We camped and could hike in the beautiful surroundings. There are lots of opportunities for short day walks if you are not going on a longer trail.

Here is our blog entry for it:

As a camper, you can also use all the facilities inside the main buildings, (including free internet), there is also a small shop in case you need food. I think they also have a bar/cafe and a restaurant. It is all very warm and welcoming and the staff is great.

I backpacked for a whole month across Scandinavia and Abisko was definitely one of the highlights :) If you get the chance to go there, GO ! :D
