4 day holiday - December 2013.

Hello,

My wife and I are staying at the Marriott hotel in Copenhagen for 4 days in early December 2013. We have never visited Copenhagen before, and would like some advice on what to see, and where to go to enjoy our stay there. Any and all advice would be appreciated so that we can get a 'flavour' of the city and enjoy our stay. Thanks in advance.

Thomas.

What kind of stuff do you enjoy when you visit new cities? Do you prefer the top sights or would you like tips to a more local and off the beaten track experience?

Hi Violuschka,

Would like to do a walking tour of the city, and/or a bike tour. Obviously, the top sites would be nice. Don't really want to rush about too much, after all this is only a short break. Also, want to see the Xmas markets. Also, to try some proper Danish cuisine.

Thanks.

You should definitely visit Tivoli, both a really nice experience and a Xmas market. And also take a stroll in Nyhavn - it is touristy but pretty in December and as far as I remember there is also a Xmas market.

For proper Danish cousine that wont break the bank, I would go to Aamanns http://www.aamanns.dk/us There is both a deli and a restaurant, so you can choose which one works best for your budget. Among other things they serve the best smørrebrød (open sandwiches) in Copenhagen - everything is homemade and really delicious. If you go to Noerreport Station you can walk through The Royal Gardens (and see Rosenborg castle) to get there. On the way you will also pass The National Art Museum http://www.smk.dk/en/.

An alternative to walking/bike tours could be a canal tour: stromma.dk/en/… It is a nice way of seeing Copenhagen and will take you past some of the top sights as well.

Close to Noerreport Station is also Torvehallerne (Copenhagens food market) - it will be nicely decorated around christmas and there is lots of food specialties and nice take-away visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/torvehallerne…

A stroll down Stroeget (Very long outdoors pedestrian street) from Noerreport to Raadhuspladsen (Town Hall Square) and/or Kgs. Nytorv (which is close to Nyhavn) is also nice - especially if you walk down some of the sidestreets which are less crowded and also really cosy and old. While there you can visit the oldest confectionairy in Copenhagen, La Glace, who makes killer-cakes http://laglace.dk/en/

And for eatable souvenirs you can go to Soemods bonbons on Nørregade 24 http://soemods-bolcher.dk/en/ They make the best bonbons ever (also close to Noerreport station on a street that runs parallel to the Købmagergade part of the pedestrian street).

Hope this helps.

Forgot to add that you can also visit the Xmas market in Den Grå Hal on Christiania (the free town): visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/christiania-c… ( It is very cosy, alternative and also a nice excuse to experience Christiania visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/christiania-g… ...And definitely different from the center of Copenhagen ;)

If you like other things of the beaten path Jaegersborggade is definitely also worth a visit (especially within shop opening hours (10/11 am to 6 pm): visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/jaegersborgga…

And Manfreds in that street is also a nice place to go for Nordic cuisine that wont break the bank. Their daily dish is a relatively cheap way of getting a nice meal, and their Eggs Benedict on ryebread is legendaric: http://manfreds.dk/en
