Hotels & transportation in Gudhjem in Autumn & Winter

We are travelling to Denmark in October and would like to visit Gudhjem and other areas in Bronholm. However, by trying to book a hotel in Gudhjem, I noticed that many of the hotels do not operate in October (I assume the hotels do not run in autumn and winter). Would anyone kindly advise if Gudhjem and Bronhelm is good to visit during this autumn & winter seasons. If not, it would be very dissappointing but then we will have to look at other destinations in Denmark. What would be the small coastal towns, not too difficult to travel from Copenhagen, that run during autumn & winter.

Thanks a million!!!

Many hotels outside of Rønne on Bornholm do not run all year round.

Generally speaking once the bathing season is over - usually around the end of August - small coastal towns in Denmark close down - including those close to Copenhagen.

I personally like visiting places like this off season, but some find it depressing - and prepare to bring somthing to eat and drinks as everything from restaurants to ice cream parlors close down.

Danish schools are closed one week in October, some hotels and restaurants in some locations may open for business this week - ususally week 42 - but then prepare for prices to go up and ferries to Bornholm being fully booked.

Public transportation still runs during winter and autumn on Bornholm, but it's not as easy to go along the coast as back and forth towards Rønne.

You can check travelling times between towns at www.rejseplanen.dk (change language at the bottom).

It's hard to predict the weather it can be anything from nice sunshine and 15-18 degrees to windy, raining and a miserable 10-12 degrees.

So in short if you do go prepare to bring a sweater, and rain gear and don't expect any summer oriented stuff to be open. But nature will be stunning and you can visit Hammerhus (ruins of old castle), art museums and places like that.

Andreadoria56, thanks so much. All good information. Are the museums and attractions around the area closed too? Much as we like the destination with less tourists but if it means we have nothing else to do but having a laid-back time at the hotel then we might have to reconsider. We plan to visit Bornholm and stay at Gudhjem around 17-20 October. Despite many of the businesses closing, do you think it is still worth a visit? Should I cut it down to a 2-day visit. Thanks!!

Since you plan to visit during the autumn school holiday a 3 day visit sounds about right.

Some of the attractions - like the medieval center are open. Also it's possible to go from Gudhjem to Ertholmene - tiny islands even further east than Bornholm - that's a great day trip if you handle sea travel well, it can be rough.
