Wednesday Weather

We are flying in on Wednesday with Thomas Cook. Looks like thunderstorms are forecast although I know how unreliable forecasts can be. I gather that if the rain is heavy they won't land at Skiathos, so my question is, how bad does the weather have to be to stop us landing?

If its heavy rain and poor visibility it is always the Pilots decision to attempt a landing or fly around to see if weather lifts, and if not he will divert to either Athens or Thessaloniki. always safety first.

There is no Instrument landing system at Skiathos, so the pilots, have to see the runway, to land on it. If not they go around Skopelos a few times and hope the clouds lift.

If there is a thunderstorm in progress they get out of the way of it. Skiathos storms are short sharp and often intense.

The runway has to be checked for standing water, before aircraft can land, following any storm activity.

When you arrive you will see the drainage ditches, either side of the runway, they are there for good reason ...

And the Bloke with the Paddles does not like standing in the rain.

Yes he uses flat side for dry weather, and pimply side for wet weather, looks like the pimply side will be in use this week.

Seams a bit low tech for 2017?

david.P - They land using the VOR/DME beacon over on Skopelos. There isn't a glideslope for a VOR approach, therefore it is classed as a non-precision approach.

ILS looks like this, and is mounted at the foot of the runway: canarddrones.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/…

If there was an ILS then the numpties, who stand behind the aircraft, would be impaled on it.

Either way if the pilot gets it wrong, he can end up well and truly 'stitched up' afterwards ...
