Good Mycenae Restaurant

We were part of an all day tour to Mycenae, Corinth, Epidauros & Argos when we stopped by for lunch at King Menelaos Restaurant.

This place was quite a surprise since the lunch included with the tours are usually bad. I had veal (looked grilled) and my wife had chicken souvlaki in addition to a large bottled water, tomato salad and grapes for dessert; all of which were extremely good (among the best we had in Greece). The service was excellent and so were the accomodations. We were commenting with other members of our tour that this was the best lunch so far in our tours and the people that worked in the restaurant were even giving us second servings and asking how the food was? What a pleasant surprise :)

I wish that this place could be reviewed in the restaurant section but they are not listed yet.

Hey and welcome EvanDJ:-) Glad to hear of your positive experience..and you can most certainly 'add' a new restaurant to the review listings! You'll note you'll have to give specs..address/tel numbers, etc.. TA investigates and once approved, it's up and running;-) Happy to hear you enjoyed!

Thanks for the welcome Litsa.

I did add this restaurant on the list to be reviewed.

This place was just a total surprise for me due to the quality of the food, service and surroundings. There is no better reward for places like this than to give them a great review so they could really thrive. They would totally dominate the "poor tourist diners market" if they were in Athens and be multi-millionaires since I and my ilk would have happily eaten there everyday. The food was not presented in a fancy manner nor used any exotic ingredients but was of surprising quality. Our tourist guide said that the owner has a lot of land and they serve what is freshly harvested.

It doesn't quite work that way. If they were in Athens they wouldn't have ready access to land to freshly harvest fruit and veg, and they probably couldn't afford to rent and kit out the taverna to the same high standard. Salaries would be higher and the clientele more demanding, expecting a wider range of dishes available throughout the day, so standards would invariably drop. You can bet your bottom dollar that the kitchen staff wouldn't have time to talk to the large number of customers (you need a lot of customers to become a multi-millionnaire) and they certainly wouldn't offer second helpings.

There are some excellent tavernas in Athens and some of them are extremely affordable, but few of them are within the touristy areas. The expense and organisation required to run a busy taverna in Plaka isn't for the faint-hearted.

It is not possible to become a multi-millionnaire from offering a simple and limited menu based on fresh produce, otherwise more people would be doing it....

Very true. The interesting thing to me is how they could keep this up; we were the third tour bus in the restaurant eating on the outdoor area and they easily had more room for 70 more people on the outdoor area while the indoor eating area which was empty was at least 30% larger. Obviously not a small time operation :) More power to them.

They've got it down to a science Evan..lol;-) They're used to the groups arrivals and pretty much have it down pat;-) Again, the simplicity doesn't hurt! Enjoyin'!

The probably also do weddings and christenings. Most Greek wedding receptions easily seat 300 people, so there are some very large restaurants out there. Either that, or they specialise in coach tours. There's plenty of business if you're in the right area.
