advice on family holiday to Peloponnese

We are a family with a 17 yr old (interested in ancient history) and a 12 yr old (interested in pools and beaches), so thought Greece might fit the bill for us all to find something of interest. We have been advised the southern Peloponnese area might fit the bill. Is it essential to have a car, or could we do the ancient sites via bus/excursions? Any advice on specific locations gratefully received. Also, if any specific accommodation recommended that would be also be gratefully received. (prefer small hotel or self catering, but pool essential, and walking distance to beach and/or shops). thanks!

The major sites are scattered throughout the Peloponnese, so it would be hard to see them all (or even most of them) from one base. Maybe split your time between Kardamili in the southern part and Napflio in the north.

Don't know anything about hotels with pools, but there are a couple upscale places in Napflio that I'm sure have them.

And, yes, I think a care would be essential.

Hiring a car would allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop to look at the view or have a coffee, find quiet beaches and visit more remote sites.

Nafplio is a lovely town but for a better beach have a look at nearby Tolo (you'll also see these written as Nafplion, Nauplion, Tolon, as Greek, place names are transliterated in various different ways). From this area you are in easy reach of the ancient sites at Epidavros, Mycenae, Argos and others. You could probably do these by bus if you didn't have a car.

For a very nice small hotel with pool in a beautiful area have a look at http://www.zoeresort.com/. Car essential and very worthwhile for this area.

The Zoe resort is in the seaside village of Gialova (sometimes spelt with a Y) near Pylos in the South West Peloponnese . It's a delightful area , close to Ancient Messini and with number of Venetian and Turkish castles at Methoni, Koroni and Pylos, with one of Greece's most beautiful beaches a couple of miles away at Voidhokilia , a nature reserve. The Byzantine capital of Mystra , near Sparti, would make a good, longish day trip.

You would need a hire car, but for convenience you would need one in Nafplio too.
