Family trip to Greece this April

Our family is planning a trip during school holidays to Greece for about 10 days. We were thinking in this time that the islands are not feasible, and the weather is not ideal at that time of year either. Is that true? Can one swim at the beach or in a private pool in early/mid April?

So we are currently thinking to spend about three days in Athens with a day trip to Delphi, then base ourselves fro the rest of the time on the Peloponnese. Our initial thought was to rent a villa in Methoni, but is that too far from other sites and requiring of a lot of driving? We generally plan the shell of the trip and wing it as we go, following what we are drawn to or hear conversations about, etc. But maybe that's just Laziness, haha. We want to stay on the coast. What would "central" be? We have two children, ages 7 and 9, so staying in only two places for the 10 day trip is preferable (Athens and ???) Thanks for any advice.

Suggest buying a good guide book of the Peloponnese , Rough Guide or Brandt ( there are others) and recent map. Try googling The Map Shop at Upton on Severn , often same day post.

The sea doesn't really start warming up until the beginning of May, but plenty of locals and expats swim all year.

While Methoni has a large and interesting Venetian/Turkish castle, the town will be very quiet in April, perhaps Pylos or Koroni would be a better bet with larger resident populations. Apart from the various castles , Ancient Messini is an interesting classical site and Mystra, near Sparti is a marvelous experience, which could be reached on a long day trip.

You wont need a car in Athens , I would be tempted to pick up a car at Athens Airport after your visit to the city. The motor way from the airport to Kalamata is now completed .
