Holidays in Peloponnese

I would love to go on a beach holiday in the Peloponnese but I'm unsure where to go.

I would like traditional greek charm, good greek food and a lovely beach. I would also like the opportunity to do some excursions. It would just me and my husband. Any suggestions??

Hi, Flights from Manchester to Peloponnese go to Kalamata. Therefore the only packages are to Stoupa and Finikounda, Thompson do have villa holidays in some other resorts. Tolon in the north is large and with plenty of places nearby to visit.

The south areas around Finikounda are more traditional also on the Mani around Stoupa.

The other option is to go independantly and fly to Athens and hire a car, there is a new motorway which cuts travelling time.

Perhaps you could do some more research on these areas and see if they suit your needs. good luck and happy holidays.

The Peloponnese has wonderful beaches but as the above poster said, your options are limited if you want to go down the package route.

From Manchester, Easyjet and Viking Hellas both fly to Athens direct and you can be in the Peloponnese an hour after leaving thye airport. The motorway continues to Kalamata or you can divert from it towards Nafplio or leave at Tripoli towards Sparti.

There are good beaches around Tolo but if you don't mind travelling further afield, south east Lakonia has great beaches near Monemvasia and along the coast from Elea southwards. This is a beautiful area neglected by visitors who don't fancy the 3 1/2 hour drive from Athens. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful outside high season (you don't say when you want to go). Excursions are of the do-it yourself variety and as well as Monemvasia, Mystras is not far, the lovely town of Gythio is also close and there are wonderful caves at Kastania near Neapoli. There is a lovely mountain drive to Kosmas, which goes on to the 15th C Panagia Elonas monastery and on to Leonidio which makes a grreat day out.

Hope this helps.

Sunvil have package holidays to Chrani between Kalamata and Koroni. Mark Warner also have holidays close to Kalamata. Viking Hellas only appear to be flying from Gatwick this year.

From the middle of May there are domestic flights by Aegean, from Athens to Kalamata. Also a very frequent bus service from Athens to Kalamata.

The southern Peloponnese probably lends itself to car hire rather than coach tours; outside Kalamata the roads are pretty quiet .

Tolo (Tolon) has a long, lovely beach, plenty of hotels "on" the water, and there are plenty excursions to go on - but what kind of exc. do you like?

For instance, you could

- Take a day cruise to the islands Hydra and Spetses

- Visit Epidavros, a beautiful ancient theatre

- Visit Mykines and Tirintha from Mycenean times.

- Visit a hundred Byzantine churches

- Explore the romantic and beautiful city of Nafplio, with its three castles

- See the extremely old houses in Lerna

- Hike or drive in stunning nature

- See Greece's best preserved pyramid

- etc etc

You can read about all this and more here: http://www.visitnafplio.com

Also, if you want to go on a lot of excursions, you'll need to rent a car, as the bus routes in Peloponnese (wherever you go), is not designed for sightseeing.

Hi

We love Koroni and the surrounding area and there are many lovely beaches within a short distance, on foot and by car. The harbour in Koroni is a lovely place to have a meal in the evening. There are also lots of places to visit such as Methoni, Pylos, Ancient Messini to name a few.

Simply Travel (part of Thomsons) do holidays to the Pylos, Koroni and Gialova area. (Not sure if you are after a package.)
