Vathy in mid-August

Hi. Am heading to Vathy for one week in mid-August followed by a second week on Kef. Have only visited Ithaca for a day trip before now, but loved it so much that we decided to have a week there this year. We are staying in Vathy and will have a jeep. Will we be able to access some of the coves and beaches by road, or would we be better off hiring a boat for a couple of days?

Also, any info on which beaches are the best would be really useful please. Thank you!

Hi there

It's well worth spending some additional time on Ithaca which is a truly stunning island. If you look at a map of the island you'll see that it is almost split in two by the Gulf of Molos - the northern part of the island has little access to it's eastern coastline and the southern half has little to it's western coastline due to the topography of the landscape.

There are still plenty of little lanes and tracks that lead to secluded coves and beaches and these tend mostly to be in the southern part, east and south from Vathy. If you invest in a good, accurate road map of the island like the Road Editions Sheet 304 ( which also covers Kefalonia) ISBN # 960-8481-13-9 you can see where all these tracks run to. Be prepared for a few helter-skelter rides on exceptionally steep and winding roads but take it steady and you'll be fine.

Definately go to see Kioni which is beautiful and if you enjoy history, the little town of Stavros contains the only statue of Odysseus in the Ionians. Some of the beaches are sand, some shingle, some pebble, but they are all so secluded that they all have a beauty about them and even in July, I doubt whether you'll have many for company as most visit the island via an excursion from Kef which only takes them to the Monastery of Katharon, Vathy, Anogi, Stavros and Kioni.

Hiya. I think you may have company on those beaches in August as that's when most Italians & Greeks take their holidays and head to the islands ! My friends on Ithaca advise that the population swells considerably during August ! However there will still be room for you and you have made a great choice in Vathy - my favourite place ! Have a look at this website .....

http://www.ithacagreece.com/

which will give you lots of info on Ithaca.

From Vathy there is loads that you will be able to access on foot or by car, but yes, some coves are only accessible by boat !

Have a great time ! x

Hi

We were in Ithaca for 2 weeks last August. We stayed in Vathy which was quite busy - many Greek and Italian tourists also yachting flotillas anchored in the harbour during the night.

There is a lovely double-bay which you can reach by road to the rear of Vathy called Sarakiniko, walk round the headland past the moored boats for a great beach and swimming (old hippy camp). We visited many bays and tiny beaches in the south by motorboat - an experience we would highly recommend - nothing like anchoring on your own private beach! I would say that we visited many beaches - north and south and they were all pebbly but the sea was magnificant for snorkling. When driving from Frikes heading back towards Vathy stop at some of the roadside bays they were lovely - you can't always see the beach - look out for the steps leading down - which you will see at the roadside.

Have a wonderful time - wish we were going back - but we've decided to explore the Peloponnese this year.
