Cephalonia at Greek Orthodox Easter

Just considering booking a week in Lassi from the 4th of May 2013, but have realised it's Greek Orthodox Easter then.

We would arrive in the evening on the Saturday and I was wondering how difficult/expensive it will be to get a taxi to the hotel. Also, we are going self-catering and not sure if restaurants/supermarket will be open.

Any advice appreciated

Hi corrina,

Taxis will be waiting outside the airport for the arrival of the planes. Cost is about 20 euros. There is no public transport from the airport.

If you are going to hire a car for the week it would be cheaper to hire a car in advance and collect it from the airport.

I doubt shops will close on Saturday (not sure about Easter Sunday) and expect many restaurants will be open. As the season will be just starting some may not be open.

We have not seen any places on Kefalonia closed at other religious festivals.

Many people are especially booking the beginning of May because of the Greek Easter.

Go ahead and enjoy yourself

to the Greeks Easter is a big celebration and is usually a lovely time to be on the island. expect homemade fireworks and familys out together. Shops may well be closed on sunday.. I know that is one day the ferries dont run but Im sure you will not go hungry.

Expect shops to close certainly Easter Sunday & Monday...several will close right through from Good Friday (3rd May) to the Tuesday. There will be no problem however (normally) with bakers & butchers who will open for period of time.

As said Easter is a BIG celebration, far larger than Christmas. Make sure you visit a couple of the shops that will sell decorated Easter Candles (gift given probably far more common than Easter Eggs) they make fantastic and unusual gifts for back home.

Hi there

I would imagine that there will be some wonderful celebrations taking place at the Monastery of Agios Gerasimos, it's not that far from Lassi and is well worth a trip there anyway.
