Sailing from Lixouri early in April

We have just booked our first ever family sailing holiday right at the beginning of April. We know we are taking our chances with the weather but the holiday was an absolute bargain- less than half the price of the summer holidays, so we are prepared to take the risk to achieve our aim of learning to sail. I'm guessing it will be more pleasant than the Solent, in any case!

Does anyone have any experience of sailing this early in the season? Specifically, I'd like to ask about what sort of clothing to pack in order to be prepared for April in Kefalonia. (I guess I may need to find a specialist sailing forum for a detailed list of what to wear...)

Also, is the sea temperature likely to be bearable for a quick dip wearing a shorty wetsuit (or am I being ridiculously optimistic!?)

.

Finally, is anyone able to tell me if Lixouri/ Lixouri Marina is likely to have many shops/ bars/ restaurants open at this time of year?

Many thanks for any info.

Sea temperature :- In May I find the sea a bit too cold for comfort just wearing trunks.

Lixouri:- Don't know what will be open but Argostoli is just across the bay and as well as mooring facilities you can always catch the ferry across.

Clothing:- Have not been in April but mid May we sometimes needed a long sleeved shirt during the day and most evenings.

All the above info is based on holidays in Kefalonia and NOT sailing there although I do sail at other times.

There are plenty of websites that will show climate in Kefalonia.

Hope all goes well!

Hi there

Early April is very early in the season, and as Kefalonia sits way up north in the Ionians, chances are that the weather won't be much cop at that time of the year. You might get lucky, and have some dry, warmish days or it could be cold, wet and windy, with rough seas which is no doubt why your holiday was half the price of the same one in summer.

As for swimming, you'd have to be very hardy to swim in the Ionian Sea in early April.

My in laws are full time, albeit retired yachties and they have berthed a couple of times for the winter in Lixouri, as do many other retired yacht people so I'm sure there will be places to eat and drink although as Bob says, you're only a stone's throw from the capital Argostoli,. where most places will be open.

So how did your holiday go?

we're doing probably the same Sea Trek holiday in June so we'd enjoy hearing how your holiday went and what to expect?

Hi folks,

Many people only come to the forums to ask questions (no problem with that!). When they get the answers they do not visit the forum again.

To contact the oroginal poster, click on their name, on the bottom left of "their" page is a way of sending them a message. This will appear in their usual emails.

Hope this is some help

Hi there I'm sorry I missed the post from 25 th April. As Bob says, checking the thread after you travel isn't always something people do. I did get an email today, though, alerting me to your post, sunshine. Hence this reply...

The holiday was great. Sea trek are a great little company with fantastic staff. Very friendly. Very professional. Great with the kids.

We went off peak and (paid peanuts )so the weather was cool and blustery- we were even unable to sail a couple of times due to high winds. Still, DH and I passed our ICC and comp crew respectively and did sufficient sailing to meet the necessary standards.

Lixouri is fine as a base, with supermarkets and plenty of restAurants within 200m. The marina is very basic and has no facilities. Sea trek have an apartment with a single bathroom that was shared by the 5 families in our group. This aspect felt a bit like camping, tbh. BUT when you go it will be hot, you will use the showers on deck, you will anchor overnight and therefore be able to use/ flush your loo at night. We were off peak, had to return to the marina each night and therefore were could not flush the loos directly into the marina (yuk) so had no choice but to use the shared facilities. Please dont let that worry you though....We made friends who went during high season and they said the bathroom side of things was totally not an issue in the hot weather as they moored/ Anchored up in bays that were inaccessible to us back in April, due to weather and the fact that restaurants were closed in remote spots. They said that it was a totally different holiday in high season really, but I guess the things that are constant are the good service and friendly instructors.

Lixouri itself is quite remote ( tip of peninsula) and sail times to nearby towns/ ports are long, so I think the sailing itinerary could be described as a. bit limited by Ioninan standards. But for beginners on a learn to sail or for more experience sailors wanting longer sailing days I think it's fine.

Would we recommend sea trek overall ? Yes definitely.

Ps if you google sea trek and daily mail, you should find an old holiday article/ review about them.

To clarify...., there are of course showers in the boats' bathrooms as well as a deck shower! We couldn't use them really as you can't really pump out straight into the marina and it was chilly on board so a per shower was called for.
