October in Kefalonia/Cephalonia

I'm thinking of booking a villa for half term week in October (20 - 27). Is that a good/bad time to go? I have seen conflicting comments including dire warnings of swarms of mosquitoes/wasps!

We've been a few times in October but never quite as late in the month. Never experienced problems with mozzys or wasps however the weather can be very unpredictable at that time of year with a fair amount of rain a distinct possibility.

If you're not overly concerned about sunshine we find it a nice time to go, although usually really quite quiet. Some of the bars/restaurants will have closed for the season but the ones which are still open often have late season discounts and the staff are usually pretty happy as they're winding down for the season.

Where abouts on Kefalonia are you thinking of going?

Mosquitoes etc can be sorted with the correct precautions - like making sure you have the correct sprays and keeping your nets/shutters closed in the villa. However the weather can be very unpredictable - with storms etc = in the Ionian islands and Epirus the rains start in October - and when the start we tend to get a good thrashing! Of course it may be wall to wall sunshine - but be prepared for rain. If you want a milder climate - head further south to Crete (for example)

We have been to Kef at various times and never seen swarms of wasps or mosquitos.

We have at times had the odd mozzy or wasp in our apartment: also on the beaches.

Some of the beaches where there is a lot of undergrowth do provide wasp traps but even there they are never a big problem.

We have however, never been that late in the season but this year are going late September/ early October so will add to this posting when we return.

One advantage will be that the restautants that are still open will be generslly those that are open all year!

Disadvantage, as others have said, unreliable weather!!

Thanks for the responses. They are very helpful. I think the villa was near Fiskardo in the North of the Island. While we are not desperate for sun, I think we may look further South such as to Crete as it would be disappointing if the holiday was a washout! Maybe another time ...
