South Kefalonia

Hi there, does anyone have any advice on which resort to choose in the south of Kefalonia? We are planning to spend a view days in the north (either assos or fiskardo) before heading to Vasiliki and then back to kefalonia for a few days before flying home. We are looking for something picturesque, convenient for visiting the sights in the south of the island, and not filled with package holidays! x

Hi there

The south is the best part of the island for sightseeing as most of the top sights are within this area. As you want "picturesque", I would suggest either Katelios (south coast) or Agia Efimia (east coast).

Kefalonia is a prime destination for UK visitors so you will never avoid the throngs, especially if you visit in July or August

You won't avoid package tourists in Kefalonia, the airport put paid to that a long time ago, virtually every resort in Kefalonia is covered including Fiskardo which sports a pub.

The least used resorts for package tourists are Poros and Sami, however not good choices. Probably the best of a reasonable size is Nea Skala which though modern is a village.

A slight word of warning, I was stuck for 3 days in Fiskardo due to weather preventing the landing craft ferry from going to Vasiliki, unusual but it does happen.

I would go with Gb's suggestions. Both resorts are picturesque and though the odd package tour companies go there, it's not in a big way. Skala is nice too but is getting a lot more commercialised especially with British tour operators.

I would also go along with GB's suggestions as we stayed in both places this May. Both were quiet but it could have been the time of year, I imagine both are more lively in the height of summer.

If you are already going to be staying in either Assos or Fiskardo earlier in your holiday you'd probably be better off choosing Katelios as you could more easily visit Agia Efimia from either Assos or Fiskardo.

If you choose Katelios and are booking accommodation yourselves I can recommend Dreams Apartments (see my review on here) and check out - agni.gr/kefalonia_travel_guide/…index.asp
