Sifnos in October

My husband and I are planning to stay in Sifnos for a couple of nights in October this year. Our time is not flexible at all .We are meeting family in Athens for most of the time and thought we could slip in an island for a few extra days. My concern is not knowing what the ferries will be doing at a quieter time of year. Can anyone help? What are the chances of us not getting there and back on time? Do the ferries run every day?

The Agios Georgios is certainly a good option, {31.00 euro pp economy}, although see if Zante ferries will continue onto October this year. They started up this year doing a western-mid Cycladic run, and they are exactly half the price of the speedrunner {Aegean speed lines} ie. 22 00 per person economy. They are a "little slower" than the Agios Georgios [half an hour slower}, but that's the only disadvantage. Other than that, don't expect a daily run, although the route will be mostly covered by Ventouris sealines {Agios Georgios}, which is a very punctual/smooth route {just got back yesterday}, as advised, refurbished, very good lounge- airport -seating area, {which by the way is 2 euro additional cost if you want to secure an airport seat...this info is handy for those travelling now in peak season.. for you in October, you'll have pick and choose..!}

Hello Dinabiz

The addition of the Zante ferries boat on the route is interesting. How long do you think it will last and what will be the effect on the Agios Georgios viability outside August? The last thing that the Western Cyclades needs is for the Agios Georgios' summer profit to be compromised and for its long term and year round profitability to be seriously affected.

Ventouris sealines offer a long year run {although not daily}, hopefully Zante will add to this much needed connection in winter. Certainly a great second option connecting Milos/Sifnos/Serifos and Kythnos.

Hello again Dinabiz

Zante Ferries will not operate the route in the spring, autumn or winter. They are only operating the route to take some of the high season profits. My worry is that Ventouris Lines Agios Georgios’ profits, which they rely on from the beginning of July to the end of August will be so affected that they will not be able to operate in the off season. In fact, they could go bankrupt as a result of this competition in these lucrative two months of the year. With the inaction of GA Ferries, the only lifeline for freight traffic to the Western Cyclades is the Agios Georgios. People on Sifnos have told me that freight prices have risen alarmingly over the last few years. Perhaps this is why supermarkets on the island are not as cheap as Paros or Naxos and are far more expensive than the mainland.

Greek ferry deregulation has been a mess

Freight prices are expensive everywhere now.

It's ridiculous to have to pay 400 euro plus for 4 persons plus car without cabin in the western and central Cyclades. Either with Bluestar or older conventional ferries, the price tag doesn't come down.

What may or not happen is very hypothetical. As you may know, the ferry companies are very volatile, and changes are made very often. Of course the western Cyclades will not be left without a ferry service. Nel lines as you may know are flirting with the western Cyclades, so who knows. The same applies with Zante ferries, although if you have insight info you may know better regarding the winter season. The fact that Milos has an airport, 2 flights per day in the winter season, and good low rates with OA, has always been something to fall back on, making accessibility viable in the western Cycl. Doubt that OA will withdraw that service.

Nevertheless, Ventouris sealines are one of the last, good, slow conventional ferries left in the Cyclades,from before the fast ferry days.

Stayed in Boufounis Studios - 250 meters from the port - found them clean and modern. I think they are open in October - they have a website. We travelled early may and yes off season ferries are not so plentiful.

Thanks for your thoughts, we are probably going to go the in-land route for a more predictable stay. i would hate to get stranded and miss out on seeing our beautiful family :)
