Two days on Naxos with two kids

We are traveling the Cyclades in late April (18-27) and were thinking of spending two days at Naxos in between 3 days at Santorini and Mykonos. We have a 2 1/2 yr old and an 8 month old, prefer public transportation, and are interested mainly in history and archeology. Would you advise Naxos for two days, or would the extra time taken to settle into a new place make our stay too short to be worthwhile?

How much time do you normally need to settle into a new place? An hour? Half a day? Two days?

I'd stay in Naxos in preference to Mykonos. It's a more family-friendly place with lovely beaches (though April is a bit early for beach time...)

For true history buffs, you'd be better off in Crete or Rhodes, however.

I would skip Mykonos and do Naxos. It has childfriendly beaches close to town, and several historical sites around the island. It is also more laid back, got a spectacular and scenic interior and it is much cheaper than both Santorini and Mykonos. Here is to give you some ideas:

Two days on an island is hardly enough worth its time. Take into account that moving islands will take the best part of one day away from you in transit as well as for checking out and in of hotels, commuting to and from ports, waiting time in port for embarking\disembarking etc. plus the actual journey time.

Reading between the lines of the responses you can see that Santorini is on everyone's list of must see islands.

Naxos is a perfect companion island to Santorini as it has an active main town good beaches and is much easier on your budget. You can stay at St George beach which is part of Naxos town so you can have kid activities and adult activities all within a 10 minute stroll. While April is early season when the sun is out you can grab some beach time and if the kids want to get in the water it is shallow so if there is anyplace that they might be able to get a dip, St George would be the place in April.

Because of the time it takes to do an island hop I too would suggest you only do two islands so finish your vacation in Naxos or continue with your original plan and do Santorini and Mykonos with at least a day or two in Athens at the end of the trip. If you do decide on Naxos there are daily ferries back to Athens or you can fly back but you would need to book that flight soon on Olympic Air as the seats fill up fast. and there is only one flight a day.

Have fun planning

Take the time to stay in Naxos . . . it's a wonderful combination of Old & New World, a lovely waterfront in Naxos Town with St. George Beach being an ideal place to base yourself. Excellent bus service throughout the island and fantastic inland villages in the mountains. There are archeological sites, agriculture, beaches and everything one would want from a Greek Island that is easy to get to. The island doesn't rely on tourism so April will have businesses, shops and tavernas open to keep you occupied and happy. We were there last Oct., during the off-season, and while there were other tourists around it was not crowded by any means and I would think April would be even less crowded. It's one the best all-around Greek islands to visit.

There will be many visitors during the Easter celebrations and the following week (this applies to all of Greece).

Amazing responses, I had no idea Naxos would be so perfect for us with kids!

To recap the trip, we'll be in Turkey for 10 days, Rhodes for 3, Athens for 3, then 8 days for islands, then 2 more days in Istanbul before our flight out. Sounds like 2 islands would be suitable, and from other feedback, Santorini sounds like it should be out.

Ozzlem, we usually don't take too much time to decompress. This is our 3nd long trip abroad, and our 2nd with kids (only 1 last time, though), so we are used to staying on the go and don't end up spending much time in hotels.
