Evening time

Me and my boyfriend (young couple in 20s) are thinking of visiting Crete this august for 10/14 nights. Not sure exactly which area we are going to be staying in, but like the look of Rethymnon. However, before deciding we'd like to know what the evening time has to offer in Rethymnon. We would like something that is lively but not hectic like Malia, somewhere which has nice food and cocktails! ...so just wondering what people make of he evening/nightlife here? Thank you.

Hi there

Rethymno is a buzzing, vibrant, working town with a Uni so it's lively and has loads of bars and restaurants but it's certainly as far removed from Malia as a place could be. It's a very historic town with lots of antiquities, not least of all it's stunning Venetian fortress and harbour. Just be aware when booking your accommodation that the town has a huge beach which runs for several kms to its east and there are several resorts along that beach strip which may well be advertised as being in Rethymno but which in actual fact, could be 10-15 kms east of the town.

There is however an excellent bus service along that strip so it's easy enough to get into town should that issue arise.

As mentioned, Rethymnon is a University town, and actually the nightlife in town is really vibrant, with many good choices of restaurants and bars. The old town is pedestianized in the afternoon, where you can enjoy it walking. I think you can enjoy it as fast or as slow you want. You should consider staying close or in the old town, where the nightlife is, but that would mean 15 min of foot to the beach. Or maybe the other way around finding a hotel that's footsteps away from the beach and 15min away from the old town.
