tour guide for Knossos?

We will only have one full day in Heraklion and would like to make the most of our opportunity to visit Knossos. We have heard it can be a confusing place, so would a local guide be the best option, and has anyone had good experiences to pass on? Also, what would be an acceptable price to pay?

Hi there

Knossos isn't confusing at all - just buy the excellent guide booklet from the ticket kiosk and wander around at your own pace. Everything is labelled in English so there's no doubt about what you're looking at. Unless you are really avid history/archaeology buffs, I wouldn't go to the expense of a local guide - you are shepherded around the site in large groups, half the time you can't get close enough to take photos, and if another tour party is hard on your heels, you'll be chivvied along to make way for them.

Hi there

I assume you have been offered a tour via the cruise ship? My guess is that they are charging way over the odds....

It's easy to get to Knossos under your own steam - two choices really, either jump in a cab at the cruise terminal which will take maybe 15 mins according to traffic and cost around 10 euros each way or walk west along the street from the cruise terminal exit and you will see the bus station from where buses run every 30 mins or so straight to Knossos. Any bus with Knossos or Archanes on the front will drop you there. One way fare's a couple of euros and it takes about as long as the taxi.

You can hire a guide on the spot they charge about 15 euro p.p. and will explain you the excavation. It's realy worth the money, specially if they tell you the stories in a tastefull way

Hi We are currently in Iraklion and have just visited Knossos today - we followed Gb's advice on earlier forums - easily caught Bus 2 from Bus station at port - bought guidebook at bus station - when we arrived at Knossos 15 minutes later on bus there were guides offerring their services but not needed - can guide yourseld - all well marked and use your guide book. Do have a fresh orange juice at the gate as you leave and take a hat - today in April quite hot. Great experience, well worth it. The bus trip is part of the experience. Also if you plan to go to Museum in town ( temp display) there is a cheaper combined ticket and museum is short walk up from bus station. We got off bus on way back from Knossos at stop near Astoria hotel and walked down to museum and then back to hotel at port. Enjoy

You can get a private guide at the entrance. You are not pushed around by the guide. The guides are proffessional and care about what you think.

You can ask as many questions as you like.

Id go for a guide if you are really interested in the palace and want to learn about things in a greater depth. If not as previous people have said a good guide book will do.

The guide makes the palace come alive.

you can have a guide if theres only one or two of you

theres no need to have to join a big party

I never said that people were pushed around by the guides, but would be hurried along if another tour group was close behind. This happened to us the first year we ever went to Knossos so we said then that in future, we would always do it ourselves. The guides depend upon having several in their group at least - they'd much rather have a dozen for example at say 15 euros each for an hour than 2 people at 15 euros each for an hour when there's no more work involved for them, other than the fact that they might have to speak a bit louder.

Easy to do yourself - save the money for a great waffle in town or boukatsa with honey and nuts......
