West of Heraklion - places to visit

We will be staying in Heraklion for a few days next month, before we go on to Elounda for a week.

Intend to visit Knossos and the museums etc in Heraklion but have a couple of spare days so may well go somewhere to the west. Can anyone recommend somewhere worthwhile visiting (by bus only).

Did think about going over the Santorini for the day on the fast catamaran but uncertain as yet. We did this 20 years ago so not too bothered about going back just for the day - would rather stay longer in the future.

Hi there

Why not take the bus west to Rethymno? It's a lovely town full of architecture from several periods of history as well as it's huge fortress and Venetian harbour, museums, beaches and some of the best shopping on Crete. Lots of bars and restaurants for lunch and dinner as well.

You could also consider taking the same bus ( number 2 from bus station A in Iraklion)that drops off at Knossos and continuing south to Archanes, a delightful town famous for it's wine production.

Sorry, just to make that clear, NOT the same bus that goes to Rethymno, but the #2 that goes to Knossos and Archanes.

Thank you GB - have looked at Rethymon online and looks an interesting place. Do you know how long the bus takes from Heraklion?

Agree with GB re Rythenmon, but a good day out can be had hiring a car and taking the road South from Heraklion to visit the site of the ancient Minoan palace of Festos and on the way stop off at the Roman settlement of Gortin. Stop off in any of the 'working' villages for lunch as we did and get the true taste of Greece rather than that served up for tourists. You can motor South after Festos and find a beach to cool off before returning to Heraklion

Another great day is a trip up into the mountsins to the Lasithe Plain. The views are absolutely fantastic - and again there are some lovely roadside tavernas where you can get a really good lunch up there at very reasonable prices. Go up to Lasithe via the turn-off at Stalis signposted towards 'Mohos' and then return via the road from Lasithe to Malia. You will not be disappointed.

TO answer asked (and unasked) questionsa about travel time from/to Heraklion via bus, here are 2 websites

bus-service-crete-ktel.com/timetabledet.php…

and

http://www.cretetravel.com/Bus_schedules/

This is the most helpful one. gives going/returning times, (AND duration of ride!),prices, where to get the bus in most places. The prices/times are 2007 but I bet 2008 won't be that different.

Using this, you can figure out almost any day trip. Hve FUN.
