Elounda Beach

Good to hear from Lynne that the beaches have been re-sanded,they were getting a bit scruffy in places last year but that didn't stop us spending lots of time on them. The sunbeds & umbrellas were all out from May the last two years but no beach attendants until 1st June from which time they started collecting money for the use of the beds & umbrellas and the beach was kept tidy from then on.

We had the added bonus of free beds for several days the last 2 years and were quite happy to clear away any rubbish left by other users and one day a couple of teachers & a party of schoolchildren came on to the beaches armed with plastic bags to clear any debris which shows how proud they are of their village. It seems a bit odd not to employ beach attendants during May because the beach was quite busy and money collected for use of beds & umbrellas would have exceeded the cost of employing a couple of attendants but was obviously due to cutbacks.

It's good to hear from Lynne that everything is gearing up for the season and enjoy reading her posts for local news & gossip. We were sorry to hear that Angelika & her husband have sold Camelot because we always enjoyed calling in for lunch or a frappe and a chat over the years but realised that things were getting difficult over the last few years, not nearly as busy. Sounds like the place is in good hands from reading an earlier post of Lynne's and wonder what they're doing now.

Not too long now before we're back in Elounda again. Can't wait!!

Hi there

With regards to beach attendants ...its all to do with the contracts for the beach ............I know that there was problem last year with these for Voulisma beach too and no beach attendance were around in May, but when we went back in July they had returned ..as you said its great to get free sun beds, but you also need them to clean the beach too...especially during the high season .so its probably the same problem with Elounda too.....I am sure that Lynn wlll be able to confirm -)

Hi Ho - yes, it was a contract issue...Elounda seems to come a way down the list for some reason!!

There has now been formed (think the English there is sound) a merchants association here in Elounda, and they, together with the local council , are making a concerted effort to address some of the issues for visitors.

We were talking to a couple of the members the other night, and they have already 'put their hands in their pockets' to tarmac the car park up the hill on the road to Kato and Pano. They have persuaded the coaches to use this in Summer rather than the one down by the beach (HOORAY) and to allow visitors more time in Elounda.

Both beaches have been re-sanded, and there are plans afoot to extend the one down beyond Akti Olus and make it a bit bigger...the children's playground has had a complete refit, and is now beside the beach, opposite Rudis, Ellie's , Kaaren's...it's quite a long one ha ha...lovely new equipment and seating areas, all enclosed with a picket fence, and has the rubberized paving down around the climbing frames etc.

We have a new bakery just opened, the pottery shop is gearing up now, Gusto, Alligator and the other sdesigner outlets are open...it's all happening here!! As you can tell, we are all very positive about the Season - all we need is you guys to come back and see us, and all is wonderful :) O, we completed the street map - a bit basic but it works, and that shows all the things from Mavrikiano (The Hope) to Kanali!

Hi Lynne

Thanks so much for letting us all know how things are going. It's great to hear that everything is getting back to how it was a few years ago and hope tourists will return in droves not just here but elsewhere in Greece. Tourism is so badly needed and in our opinion there is nowhere better to spend your holidays than Greece so keep coming visitors you're very much needed and will have the warmest of welcomes wherever you go and Elounda in particular is wonderful

Even more excited now can't wait to be there!

Thanks too to MG really enjoy reading his posts too

Hi to all you good folk

Elounda sounds (and looks) great....does this mean that the main beach will now be very sandy? We're going there for the first time in August (we love the heat!).....and... does anyone know what the cost of the sunbeds and parasols are likely to be this year on this beach?

Thank you in anticipation....MrM99...YNWA

Thanks for the updates Lynn, glad to hear that the playground has now opened, such a Godsend for locals and visitors with children, we spent many hours in the old one .

Does the new coach park have any affect on the market or has this moved location again?

You don't need a street map for Elounda as it is not very large and you will soon find where everything is.
