Hi Danielle

Excellent choice :-) Elounda is very pretty little resort with lots of tavernas, shops and accomodation based around a small harbour, and yes you are right its less commercialised than Stallis is and has more of a Greek feel to the place too. Totally different to Rethymnon which is a working Greek town so more comparable to Agios Nikolaos than Elounda. Agios Nikolaos is less than 10 mins drive away from Elounda.

You have a good choice of beaches, and heres a link with all the info :-)

Am happy to give you some idea of places to visit in this area - are you hiring a car during your stay Danielle??

2. Re: beaches

I think you've made the right choice.

Re the beaches, here's some details. Follow the links for the location and see my description below:-

A

is a cove that marks a dry river bed, large shingle, overlooked by small cliffs and rocks. Follow the river bed inland for a good Gorge walk. You will have to clamber through bushes and will need good footwear. Good walks in all directions. The beach itself is usually quiet with no commercial trappings. When the wind is strong there can be quite a strong shore break with undertow as the beach is steep, be careful if you are not a strong swimmer. My wife got into difficulties here once. Parking close. Taverna nearby. A favourite of ours.

B

is a smaller cove with similar shingle. Parking nearby.

C

A lovely beach with small and large shingle, great for snorkling. Parking. Another favourite.

D

longish beach with large shingle. Overlooked by small cliff and rocks which look loose. Parking nearby but nothing else. (we don't use this one)

E

Adjacent to Plaka. Can get busy, has loungers and umbrellas. Handy for bars and food. Large shingle. Not really my cup of tea.

F

Umbrellas, loungers, Showers and very handy for Elounda town center. Sandy. This one gets busy so not a favourite of mine. Great if you've got kids.

G

similar to F but further from Town center and refreshments although there are Tavernas, eateries within 5 mins. We don't use this one.

H

a slightly scruffy cove with large shingle and rocks, great for snorkling.

I

slabs of rock big enough to spread a towel and get comfortable. Great snorkling, swimming but you will need something on your feet when clambering in and out. A favourite. Get there early for the best spots. 15 min walk for refreshments.

J

The most scenic beach around, a sandy cove surrounded by rocks. Beautiful blue water and great for swimming. Large boats anchor up here with noisy holiday makers. BBQs are had here. It gets busy with limited space so not a favourite of ours. Stout foot wear needed to get to this one. Very steep path down from parking. No refreshments nearby.

K

a tiny sandy cove, completely secluded, Big enough for one family or a pair of lovers who don't mind a 20 minute walk......so sweet that I'm reluctant to tell you about it (seriously)

L

if K is occupied walk on for this one. Sandy and hardly used. another favourite.

.......no doubt there are more. The beaches that I mentioned on the north coast will get a big shore break when the wind is strong. This can make swimming difficult/dangerous in places, so think about the wind when you plan your day.

If you copy and paste the link into a new window address bar it should work.

Hi Gary

We are traveling to Sissi in September. The info you've provided on Elounda beaches looks superb. The links are inactive though, could you repost?

Thank you,

Kelley

9. Re: beaches

Hi there

If you have a car then why not spend the day at Voulisma or Golden beach - it really is a beautiful beach, and driving wise from Sissi will take you around 30 - 35 min

SunLuvr,

Sorry about the links being dead, my flickr account has closed. Shame we can't post photos directly. I'll rewrite the descriptions with directions and repost....It may be a bit late for you but may be of some use to others.
