Crete Newbie, booked Elounda Carob Tree Villas

Hi there

Never been to Crete before and last night booked a villa at Elounda carob tree valley villas.

few questions I hope you can help.

Is there a map showing the location of these villas to anyones knowledge?

They look slightly elevated and I know they are 2.5 km from elounda and an unspecified distance from Plakia. could anyone tell me how easy (or not) the walk is, is it ok to do it at night, any paths (not expecting lights)We don't mind a bit of a walk - build up an appetite for dinner and walk it off on the way back!

recommendations on good Fish restuarants and good greek food.

What watersports are available? Are there many fish around, we enjoy snorkalling.

I am sure there will be more questions over next couple of months, thank you in anticipation

Carob Tree are set back from Tsifliki, between Elounda and Plaka, down a private road of about 1km. This is not well lit.

I have a map if you want to contact me directly. The walk to Plaka is about 15 minutes and as you are almost next to the Blue Palace Hotel, the street lighting is quite adequate although you do have both private phones and access to Andreas the on-site manager if you need a taxi.

Plaka is famous for fish restaurants although a little commercialised nowadays since the Blue Palace opened. Elounda has some resonable restaurants but you might need to go into Agios Nikolaos for a better standard.

Watersports are available on the beach between the villas and Blue Palace. Blue Palace also has a dive centre which is open to non-residents (contact him direct, don't go through reception). There are fish around but Elounda was overfished for many years. Ask the watersports man on the beach for advice on snorkelling.

Hope this helps.

"Elounda has some resonable restaurants but you might need to go into Agios Nikolaos for a better standard."

Come -come- simplycreteholidays.... Elounda has some fabulous restaurants/tavernas...mellisos,tryst,marilena, Neisar check out makeitgreece site for personal recommendations... elounda lovers who have been visiting elounda for years- and wouldnt do so if the restuarants/tavernas were not "up to much" !

However must say I agree with "simpleys" comments re Plaka... too touristy these days...

You will be lucky to find restaurants of a better quality than those found in Elounda, as the standard is very high there. I could recommend many but it is more interesting to try them yourself, as everyone has their favourites, and you will certainly not be disappointed in the hospitality you experience in the village.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Simplycrete - I will PM you for a map that would be fantastic. My partner and I also like to walk around a bit later afternoon / early evening sometimes for a bit of exercise so a map would be handy. (year before last in Skiathos we used to go to the dogs home and walk some of the dogs which was great - it made the kids want to come too!).

Well we will have 14 evenings out I suppose to eat around and enjoy the local food. Any particular recommendations?

when you're having a wander- try and get to the very old cemetry -behind elounda but between mavrikano and Elounda-theres a grave of the crew of a flying boat which used to land in the mirobello bay between the 2 wars.. it used to stop over for re fuelling

.. we picked up a book in elounda number of years ago...Imperial airlines i think.....

There's some great walks and the little book shop on the hill on the way to Ag nic..sells a book of local walks... the views are fantastic when you get high up.

What time of year are you going?

Re Restaurant / tavernas... I've mentioned my fave.. but there are lots more....I would suggest you just take a wander in teh evening and check them out....

www.makeitgreece.net is a site used by elounda lovers so you may pick up some tips there...

Happy Holiday..

another question.............!

Nearest supermarket for fresh stuff and also where is nearest big supermarket we can do a big sop when we get there. There are BBQ at the villa so a recommendation for a good butcher and bakery would be good!

Neisar

Right in the centre of Elounda village there are two supermarkets. One of them is cavanous and sells everything. It includes a butchers too. The other one is not as large, but is staffed, imho, by mutch nicer people.

Personal message me and I'll show you some photo's of them via Flickr

good on yer DA.. my fave butcher is george... just up from macreis's taverna.. opposite the alygos rear door....local man- which is good...

BIG supermarkets in Ag Nic... if you have a car my local friends shop there and not the big one in elounda...sorry to say prices there are inflated for the tourist. Having said there -there is a supermarket next to or very close to the eden bar and they are fantastic people in there....and do remember you.. paying the extra there is worth it.. just for the friendliness and chat....
