Real Greek Restaurant......where do the locals eat?

Anybody recommend good greek taverna or restaurant that caters for the locals as opposed to the tourist traps in Chania Town. Staying there for 5 nights and I've a chef as my other half so good fresh food is a must.

The small tavernas/ snack bars within the central market are amazing. There are different dishes prepared each day so no menu, just pick what looks good! Also the tavernas on the harbour past the mosque building seemed to have more locals than tourists in (or they did last June!)

In Splanza. On chatzimichaili Ntatali, you will fond plenty of restaurants where the Chaniotis go for good food.

Rin is correct. If you go to the new harbour past the mosque you will find locals particularly later at night. last year we arrived Chania at 11pm and were looking for dinner at 12. We went to the new harbour area and sat down and the waitress said "what are you doing over here the tourists all eat over there" pointing to the Venetian harbour. Apparently two jet lagged Canadians don't appear to look like Greeks. Who would have guessed.

Try Peinaleon, on El Venizelou St (closed July & August), it's the road leading from the stadium out to the courthouse. lovely room, lots of delicious ready-cooked foods on the hot-plate to choose from, great value.

Although touristy, Tamam still has good cooking, as does Chrisostomas, you'll find Greeks & all nationalities here!

If you have a car, I recommend Dounias up at Drakona - a lovely drive up a gorge to Theriso, then around the hill a little - a pretty trip out & real Cretan village food done very well. You get a tour of the kitchen to see everything, cooked on wood-fired ovens, homebaked dakos rusks etc & they use unusual 'peasant' ingredients such as Hondros.

Try to get to Dounias, it's the most amazing place owned by a young guy with a beautiful family and an incredible passion for life, food and nature. The food is wonderful, slow cooked with all his own produce and we enjoyed the wine from his cellar which he was kind enough to show us. While in the cellar we spotted a few bottles of whisky in a corner so we'll be packing a bottle of Highland Park for our return in August!

Hi,

You can find tavernas in Hania town also where local people go. Chrisostomos, Kouzina epe, Glossitses, Tamam, many restaurants in Hatzimihali Daliani street, Thalassino Ageri in Halepa...If you are thinking in eating outside of Hania you can try the villages of Gavalohori-at Monica's, Drakona-Dounia, Zourva;Therisso...It all depends in wich part of the prefecture you will be! Locals often go out and eat in villages next to Hania.
