Chania v Rethymnon?

I was looking to book a week in Rethymnon in September, but reading up on Chania, I really can't decide which to go for. We have been to Ag Nik, which we liked very much and would like someting similar, good restaurants and bars, but nothing too loud! Also like a nice beach and a bit of walking/sightseeing - but nothing too strenuous!

If anyone has been to both which would you recommend? decisions, decisions!!!

Why not stay a few days at both? We only have 5 days in Crete, but we're staying in Chania for 3 days and Rethymnon for 2. We're staying at the Porto del Colombo in Chania and the hotel Fortezza in Rethymnon. From Chania we can go on a day trip to the Samaria Gorge and visit Elafonisi beach and from Rethymnon we will drive to Knossos.
