Child wants a beach

Dear all,

I'm looking for a place to stay in greece for two adults with a small child (nearly 3) within walking distance of a beach. Any suggestions?

For how long? If it's a short while & you like things very quiet, undeveloped, simple & genuinely Greek how about Kato Zakros in south eastern Crete? It's a tiny bay where the sea is very calm, with just 4 tavernas and about 7 rooms/appts places, 4 of which are very near the sea (almost in it). A choice of sand or pebble coves. Minoan palace ruins a stone's throw from the beach. Easily walkable gorge about half a kilometre inland. No package tourists, discos, hotel chains, lager louts, bingeing teenagers. But also no shops (the few nearby are in the village 8km away but most rooms owners will be happy to help you with supplies, or better still stock up before you arrive). Friends have been holidaying there with their daughter since she was a few months old & they love it. Easy to take a baby or very young child into the sea, as it's so calm.

If that sounds too boring, there are lots of rather different places on Cretan beaches. I hope others will post some suggestions. Good luck & have a super time when you find your spot!

If you want Greece then a good choice is www.stavros-studios.gr in Chania Crete. Good prices family friendly and next to the beach with a big kids swimming pool.

Go to Skiathos, Koukounaries is a nice quiet spot , with a plentiful supply of Taverna's, swimming pools and beaches, all in easy distance.

It's for two weeks. We don't want it too quiet, we would like a few shops, bars and restaurants around. Also watersports and places to take kids that are fun. Thanks for the replies.

I have just returned from Crete May 20th 2006.

Stayed at the Petra Mare Hotel in Lerapetra.

I would recommend this hotel as its really kiddie friendly, has its own water park & is right on the beach.

There are kids clubs throughout the day & night & plently for the adults too.

The beach is black coarse sand & pebbles but lovely to play on, although beach/wet shoes are advisable as its gets very hot.

The food is reasonable & they have a childs buffet in the evening, chips, pizza, salad & spagettii is available all day at the snack bar.

hope this helps, enjoy your holiday

If you want somewhere not too spoilt by tourists then I would recommend village called Kalives on Crete. You fly into Chania. Kosmar have some very reasonably priced holidays here. We have been going to Kalives for the past 5 years with our daughter who is now 6. The beach (harbour end) is very safe for children to play in - virtually no waves and stays shallow for some time. This is why we keep on returning to Kalives. You can book flights with BA and then your own accommodation (this is what we are doing this year as we want to go Friday to Friday). Flights into Chania are Tuesday to Tuesday. You are probably looking at paying around £1,200 for the three of you during summer school holidays or less than £1,000 out of school holidays for 2 weeks. Eating out is relatively cheap in Chania. Last year in some Tavernas we were paying around £18 for 2 courses and wine for 3 of us. If you want any more info on this area then email me at heathercarson2000@yahoo.co.uk

Regards,

Heather
