Greek Island Hopping

We are a mature couple interested in seeing the greek islands for a period of 10 - 14days, we looked at a cruise but they only stayed a short while in each place, so we would prefer to be able to freelance where possible, which are the best islands to visit (we are interested in historical buildings) and the best ferries to travel on (not too small) as we cant jump on and off boats at our age (60's)

best time to visit - we are flexible, but on a budget 3/4 star only, but near to the water as we are Australians and must get our water fix every so often. Any help would be appreciated, also if anyone wants to know about our great country pls email me, cheers.

Hey alice63 and welcome:-) Since you posted in Chania Forum am assuming it is of interest? You can actually plan out your entire stay on this one isle since it's so large..Crete alone makes for it's own destination! Am sure our resident experts/locals here will kick and advise..but a thought since you would not need to hop on/off ferries..You have a choice of a quick flight over as well..the ferry journey is a rather long one but can be an adventure on it's own! Another isle that may interest you is Rhodes.. You can easily as well spend an entire week+ here exploring..Both of course have wonderful beaches and a great time would be either in June or Sept..the latter will have about the best Seas for swimming since being sun-kissed all Summer long! Am sure you'll get some great suggestions/recommendations here! Enjoy!

Hi

I would suggest something like this starting from Athens.

Fly/ferry from Athens/Piraeus to Rhodes, and fly/ferry back from Kos to Athens/Piraeus.

Between those islands are 3 small islands Symi/Tilos/Nisyros, maybe 1 or 2 of those which you can do by ferry whilst going from Rhodes <> Kos.

Rhodes and Kos have a lot of history attached, and older buildings and arheological sites to view. The smaller islands I just put in to give you a taste of the smaller Greek Islands and ferry travel as part of the deal.

Obviously being on the internet you can easily research those islands and see if would suit you.

Another possibility is just Crete alone, large enough in itself to have a load of history and the like.

There are of course dozens of other possibilities of equal merit.
